5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Deyanira Castillo of Weslaco was named Student of |

6 | 6 | | the Year in 2009 by the Migrant Student Graduation Enhancement |

7 | 7 | | Program of The University of Texas at Austin; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Luis Carlos and Maria O. Castillo, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Deyanira Castillo is a senior at Weslaco East High School, and she |
---|
10 | 10 | | begins every school year six weeks late in order to work alongside |
---|
11 | 11 | | her family members in the fields of Michigan; since she was 14 years |
---|
12 | 12 | | old, Ms. Castillo has spent the summer months packing radishes, |
---|
13 | 13 | | beets, carrots, cilantro, and spinach for nearly 12 hours a day, 6 |
---|
14 | 14 | | days a week, and yet she has still managed to excel in the |
---|
15 | 15 | | classroom; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, With a 102.3 grade point average, Ms. Castillo ranks |
---|
17 | 17 | | in the top five in her class and has earned high scores on her |
---|
18 | 18 | | Advanced Placement exams; encouraged by her parents to make |
---|
19 | 19 | | education a priority, Ms. Castillo has devoted herself to her |
---|
20 | 20 | | courses, often staying after school to talk to her teachers or |
---|
21 | 21 | | studying all night to catch up on what she missed in the first weeks |
---|
22 | 22 | | of school; moreover, she has worked part-time at a department store |
---|
23 | 23 | | since 2007; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, This fine young Texan has further distinguished |
---|
25 | 25 | | herself through her involvement in numerous extracurricular |
---|
26 | 26 | | activities, including the University Interscholastic League math |
---|
27 | 27 | | and prose teams and the Drama Club, and she was inducted into the |
---|
28 | 28 | | National Honor Society; she is also the president of the Student |
---|
29 | 29 | | Council, and she has been recognized as the Student of the Week for |
---|
30 | 30 | | South Texas College and as the Student of the Month for the Rotary |
---|
31 | 31 | | Club; in addition, during her freshman and sophomore years of high |
---|
32 | 32 | | school, Ms. Castillo completed the summer courses offered by the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Migrant Student Graduation Enhancement Program, and these |
---|
34 | 34 | | experiences have motivated her to pursue a degree in international |
---|
35 | 35 | | business at UT Austin; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Through her perseverance, hard work, and |
---|
37 | 37 | | dedication, Deyanira Castillo has proven to be a student of great |
---|
38 | 38 | | ability and initiative, and she may indeed take justifiable pride |
---|
39 | 39 | | in her outstanding achievements; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Deyanira Castillo on being named a |

42 | 42 | | 2009 Student of the Year by the Migrant Student Graduation |

43 | 43 | | Enhancement Program of The University of Texas at Austin and extend |
