| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Ismael Gonzalez has earned the Lifetime Service |

| 6 | 6 | | Award from the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce for his contributions |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | to his community; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Mercedes, "Mike" Gonzalez |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | graduated from high school in 1966 and attended The University of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Texas--Pan American, where he was on the baseball team; he |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | graduated in 1970, and that same year, he began a distinguished |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | teaching and coaching career with the Mercedes Independent School |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | District; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Gonzalez was a respected and effective educator |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and coach at every level; he taught high school health and history |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | while coaching baseball, basketball, football, and track; at |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Mercedes Junior High, he taught content mastery and served as head |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | coach for all sports; in addition, he was responsible for many |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | district and school tournaments for elementary students; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his 29-year tenure with MISD, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Mr. Gonzalez was an outstanding role model for students both in the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | classroom and on the athletic field; in recent years, he has |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | continued to benefit area youth as a tutor at Kennedy Intermediate |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and Hinojosa and Travis Elementary Schools; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A former member of Primera Iglesia Bautista of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Mercedes, Mr. Gonzalez served his parish as Sunday school director, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | treasurer, children's church director, Christmas program director, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | vacation Bible school director, and youth counselor; he was also a |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | member of the choir, two gospel groups, and the Valley Church |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Softball League; today, he is a member of Baptist Temple, where he |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | volunteers as a greeter; in addition to his service with his church, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | he supports a number of worthwhile causes and generously donates to |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | area charities; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The civic spirit of Mike Gonzalez has greatly |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | contributed to the vibrancy of his community, and his receipt of the |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Lifetime Service Award is yet another indication of the high regard |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | in which he is held by his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Ismael "Mike" Gonzalez on |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | receiving the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Service Award |

| 41 | 41 | | and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and |

| 42 | 42 | | happiness; and, be it further |
