No. 1774 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the San Felipe Lions Club, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this fine organization for its continued efforts in behalf of the community; and WHEREAS, With sponsorship from the Lions Club in Del Rio, the San Felipe Lions Club was chartered in 1949 by 24 dedicated civic leaders; the group has sponsored numerous initiatives, like fundraisers for hospital facilities and the establishment of recreational parks, in response to the growing needs of the town; and WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the S.F.L.C. has participated in such Lions Charities as the Texas Lions Camp for children with illnesses and disabilities and the Lions Sight Research Foundation, for which it has conducted the "Stride for Sight Walkathon"; its members have also raised funds to provide the less privileged children in the community with eyeglasses, to help offset the medical expenses for local citizens with terminal illnesses, and to assist victims of flooding in Mexico; and WHEREAS, The group has further distinguished itself through its focus on education, and it has made lasting contributions to the local school district by organizing a safety patrol, paving the streets around San Felipe High School, conducting a band uniform drive, hosting sports awards banquets and boxing matches, and by purchasing vehicles for offsite activities, jerseys for the football team, and a scoreboard for the stadium; moreover, the S.F.L.C. scholarship program has given more than $100,000 in tuition assistance to high school graduates and college students; and WHEREAS, Today, the organization continues to flourish with an active membership of 80, and in 2006, it proudly unveiled a new Juan Olivares Lions Center in San Felipe; moreover, the S.F.L.C. has helped form one of the first Boy Scouts Troops in the region, as well as a Lioness Club, a Leo Club, and other Lions clubs; and WHEREAS, For the past six decades, the San Felipe Lions Club has remained committed to building a strong community and enriching the lives of area residents, and its members may take justifiable pride in their shared legacy of good works; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 60th anniversary of the San Felipe Lions Club and extend to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the San Felipe Lions Club as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
