| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the San |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Felipe Lions Club, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | fine organization for its continued efforts in behalf of the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | community; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, With sponsorship from the Lions Club in Del Rio, the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | San Felipe Lions Club was chartered in 1949 by 24 dedicated civic |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | leaders; the group has sponsored numerous initiatives, like |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | fund-raisers for hospital facilities and the establishment of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | recreational parks, in response to the growing needs of the town; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the S.F.L.C. has |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | participated in such Lions Charities as the Texas Lions Camp for |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | children with illnesses and disabilities and the Lions Sight |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Research Foundation, for which it has conducted the "Stride for |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Sight Walkathon"; its members have also raised funds to provide the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | less privileged children in the community with eyeglasses, to help |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | offset the medical expenses for local citizens with terminal |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | illnesses, and to assist victims of flooding in Mexico; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The group has further distinguished itself through |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | its focus on education, and it has made lasting contributions to the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | local school district by organizing a safety patrol, paving the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | streets around San Felipe High School, conducting a band uniform |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | drive, hosting sports awards banquets and boxing matches, and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | purchasing vehicles for off-site activities, jerseys for the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | football team, and a scoreboard for the stadium; moreover, the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | S.F.L.C. scholarship program has given more than $100,000 in |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | tuition assistance to high school graduates and college students; |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Today, the organization continues to flourish with |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | an active membership of 80, and in 2006, it proudly unveiled a new |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Juan Olivares Lions Center in San Felipe; moreover, the S.F.L.C. |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | has helped form one of the first Boy Scout troops in the region, as |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | well as a Lioness Club, a Leo Club, and other Lions clubs; and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, For the past six decades, the San Felipe Lions Club |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | has remained committed to building a strong community and enriching |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | the lives of area residents, and its members may take justifiable |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | pride in their shared legacy of good works; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 60th anniversary of the San |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | Felipe Lions Club and extend to all those associated with the |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | organization sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it |
