44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their
66 memories of Ruth Fackler Rutledge of El Paso, who passed away on
77 March 31, 2009, at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on September 8,
99 1915, Mrs. Rutledge was a talented musician and entertainer as a
1010 child, playing her first piano recital by age seven; she also played
1111 the piano in the Kiddie Reviews and entertained at neighborhood
1212 theaters, playing the accordion and harmonica and tap dancing; a
1313 highlight of her early musical career was an invitation to be a
1414 pianist for the world-renowned Andrews Sisters; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rutledge arrived in El Paso in 1939 and was
1616 employed by Standard Oil Company; always active, she played
1717 shortstop and first base on the company softball team and joined
1818 their touring quartet of musicians, known as The Rancheritas; she
1919 married Charles Victor Rutledge in 1941 at St. Paul's Lutheran
2020 Church, where she was an active member; and
2121 WHEREAS, Through the years, Mrs. Rutledge moved with her navy
2222 commander husband to Fort Worth, Texas; Monterey, California; New
2323 York City; New Orleans, Louisiana; and the Eastern Caroline
2424 Islands, where Mr. Rutledge was appointed acting military governor;
2525 and
2626 WHEREAS, After returning to El Paso, Mrs. Rutledge devoted
2727 her considerable energy to assisting community organizations; in
2828 addition to serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, she was
2929 active in the PTA at a number of area schools, serving as president
3030 at Lamar Elementary, and her involvement earned her a lifetime PTA
3131 membership; and
3232 WHEREAS, President of the Delta Gamma Sorority Alumnae group
3333 and the Desert Hills Garden Club, she worked in behalf of the
3434 LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Sun Carnival
3535 Association, Providence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and UTEP
3636 Women's Auxiliary, which she served as scholarship chair; for her
3737 tremendous generosity and efforts to benefit the city she loved,
3838 Mrs. Rutledge was honored in 2000 by the Volunteer Bureau of El
3939 Paso, and in 2005 she was named to the Older El Pasoans Hall of Fame;
4040 and
4141 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rutledge was deeply committed to her church,
4242 teaching Sunday school, playing the piano, and acting as the Luther
4343 League sponsor; she also played the pipe organ on occasion, an
4444 instrument she studied at Texas Western College; and
4545 WHEREAS, Ruth Fackler Rutledge lived a caring and purposeful
4646 life, and she will always be remembered with great tenderness and
4747 affection; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4949 Legislature pay tribute to the life of Ruth Fackler Rutledge and
5050 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
5151 daughters, Susan Rutledge Crews and Sally Rutledge Souers; to her
5252 granddaughter, Lauren Rutledge Souers; to her grandson, Dr. Charles
5353 Rutledge Crews, and his wife, Camille Frost Crews; to her
5454 great-granddaughter, Daley Rutledge Crews; to her sisters, Lucille
5555 Andrew and Dorothy Jensen; and to her other relatives and friends;
5656 and, be it further
5757 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5858 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5959 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ruth
6060 Fackler Rutledge.
