H.R. No. 1785 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Andy Burnett has rendered valiant service in Afghanistan as a member of the United States Army; and WHEREAS, The son of Larry and Donna Burnett, Andy Burnett was born on January 4, 1980, in Laurel, Mississippi, but he later relocated with his family to the Lone Star State; he earned his high school diploma in 2004, and at the age of 18 he became the youngest firefighter ever to join the Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department, serving with the organization for nearly two years; and WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Burnett enlisted in the United States Army in April 2006; over the course of the following year, he completed basic training and airborne school, and he also trained to be a medic; deployed to Afghanistan in May 2007, he was assigned to a parachute infantry unit, and on July 17, 2008, just days before the conclusion of his tour, this brave young man was seriously wounded by a sniper's bullet; and WHEREAS, Mr. Burnett has since undergone extensive medical treatment at U.S. Army hospitals in Germany, Washington, D.C., and Florida, and he completed a physical rehabilitation regimen in record time; he has demonstrated the utmost courage and determination throughout his recovery, and he has drawn further strength from the love and support of his parents as well as his siblings, Daniel, Deborah, and Sarah; Mr. Burnett is now preparing for the next phase of his life, in which he will be pursuing a college degree; and WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to Andy Burnett and to all of the nation's military personnel, for they are called on to bear great, often unimaginable, burdens, and their sacrifices are truly beyond measure; through his unfaltering devotion to his country, Mr. Burnett embodies the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and he has earned the lasting respect and appreciation of all who know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor Andy Burnett for his distinguished military service and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Burnett as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
