5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Andy Burnett has rendered valiant service in |
---|
6 | 6 | | Afghanistan as a member of the United States Army; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The son of Larry and Donna Burnett, Andy Burnett was |
---|
8 | 8 | | born on January 4, 1980, in Laurel, Mississippi, but he later |
---|
9 | 9 | | relocated with his family to the Lone Star State; he earned his high |
---|
10 | 10 | | school diploma in 2004, and at the age of 18 he became the youngest |
---|
11 | 11 | | firefighter ever to join the Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department, |
---|
12 | 12 | | serving with the organization for nearly two years; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Burnett |
---|
14 | 14 | | enlisted in the United States Army in April 2006; over the course of |
---|
15 | 15 | | the following year, he completed basic training and airborne |
---|
16 | 16 | | school, and he also trained to be a medic; deployed to Afghanistan |
---|
17 | 17 | | in May 2007, he was assigned to a parachute infantry unit, and on |
---|
18 | 18 | | July 17, 2008, just days before the conclusion of his tour, this |
---|
19 | 19 | | brave young man was seriously wounded by a sniper's bullet; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Burnett has since undergone extensive medical |
---|
21 | 21 | | treatment at U.S. Army hospitals in Germany, Washington, D.C., and |
---|
22 | 22 | | Florida, and he completed a physical rehabilitation regimen in |
---|
23 | 23 | | record time; he has demonstrated the utmost courage and |
---|
24 | 24 | | determination throughout his recovery, and he has drawn further |
---|
25 | 25 | | strength from the love and support of his parents as well as his |
---|
26 | 26 | | siblings, Daniel, Deborah, and Sarah; Mr. Burnett is now preparing |
---|
27 | 27 | | for the next phase of his life, in which he will be pursuing a |
---|
28 | 28 | | college degree; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to Andy |
---|
30 | 30 | | Burnett and to all of the nation's military personnel, for they are |
---|
31 | 31 | | called on to bear great, often unimaginable, burdens, and their |
---|
32 | 32 | | sacrifices are truly beyond measure; through his unfaltering |
---|
33 | 33 | | devotion to his country, Mr. Burnett embodies the highest ideals of |
---|
34 | 34 | | the U.S. armed forces, and he has earned the lasting respect and |
---|
35 | 35 | | appreciation of all who know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby honor Andy Burnett for his distinguished |
---|
38 | 38 | | military service and extend to him sincere best wishes for the |
---|
39 | 39 | | future; and, be it further |
