No. 1825 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The members of the gifted and talented class of Nichols Sawmill Elementary School in Magnolia have won the Texas Grand Champion award in the intermediate category for their entry in the Future Problem Solving Program International competition; and WHEREAS, More than 250,000 students from around the world participate annually in the Future Problem Solving Program International, working to develop their critical thinking skills through creative problem-solving projects; the program is sponsored in the state by the Texas Education Agency; and WHEREAS, Under the guidance of their teacher, Cherrie Edwards, the fifth-grade members of the Nichols Sawmill gifted and talented class have arranged to bring a miniature "therapy horse" named Tess and her handler to their school and to another Magnolia Independent School District campus, Williams Elementary; and WHEREAS, Tess is part of the SIRE (Self-Improvement through Riding Education) program, and her visits will benefit the special needs students at each school throughout the 2010-2011 school year; calling their project TESS (Therapeutic Education for Special Students), the students in the Nichols Sawmill gifted and talented class have raised more than $8,500 for this innovative program; and WHEREAS, Their recognition at the state level entitles these dedicated and creative students to travel to the Future Problem Solving Program International competition at Michigan State University in May, and they may indeed take great pride in their state victory as they look forward to competing with other young people from across the nation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the gifted and talented class of Nichols Sawmill Elementary School on being named Texas Grand Champion in the intermediate category of the state Future Problem Solving Program International competition and extend to the members of the class and their teacher best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the class as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
