5	5	WHEREAS, Nurse anesthetists were the first professional
6	6	health care workers to provide anesthesia in the United States, and
7	7	they compose the oldest recognized group of advanced-practice
8	8	registered nurse specialists in this country; and
9	9	WHEREAS, These registered nurses have completed a rigorous,
10	10	graduate-level course of academic and clinical study in a
11	11	nationally accredited program of nurse anesthesia; following
12	12	graduation, they are qualified to take the national certifying
13	13	examination; and
14	14	WHEREAS, All graduates of nurse anesthesia educational
15	15	programs receive a master's degree, and those who successfully pass
16	16	the certifying exam may use the title certified registered nurse
17	17	anesthetist (CRNA); and
18	18	WHEREAS, According to the American Association of Nurse
19	19	Anesthetists, more than 65 percent of all rural hospitals rely on
20	20	CRNAs to provide anesthesia care; without these advanced-practice
21	21	nurses, some 1,500 facilities would be unable to maintain trauma
22	22	stabilization, surgical, and obstetrical capabilities, a
23	23	circumstance that would force many rural Americans to travel long
24	24	distances to obtain such services; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Each year, CRNAs working in hospitals, ambulatory
26	26	surgical centers, physicians' offices, and medical facilities of
27	27	the U.S. military, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Public
28	28	Health Service are the hands-on providers of approximately 65
29	29	percent of all anesthetics given to patients in the United States,
30	30	and in rural communities the percentage is even higher; and
31	31	WHEREAS, The delivery of health care in this country is
32	32	dependent, in large measure, on the work of certified registered
33	33	nurse anesthetists, and it is indeed fitting that they be honored
34	34	for the crucial role that they fulfill; now, therefore, be it
35	35	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
36	36	Legislature hereby recognize January 26-31, 2009, as Nurse
37	37	Anesthetists Week in Texas and extend deep appreciation to all
38	38	certified registered nurse anesthetists for the great skill and
39	39	dedication they bring to their challenging vocation.
