5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Eta Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., is |

6 | 6 | | hosting its annual Founders Day celebration on June 13, 2009; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Created as a venue for African American business and |
---|
8 | 8 | | professional women, Eta Phi Beta seeks to promote high scholastic |
---|
9 | 9 | | standards, personal growth, career awareness, and community |
---|
10 | 10 | | involvement; guided by the motto "Not For Ourselves But For |
---|
11 | 11 | | Others," the group operates a nonprofit foundation, and it awards |
---|
12 | 12 | | scholarships to high school students with business aspirations; in |
---|
13 | 13 | | addition, Eta Phi Beta sponsors professional seminars and works to |
---|
14 | 14 | | create fellowship among businesswomen, and it supports local and |
---|
15 | 15 | | national charities, as well as programs that improve the quality of |
---|
16 | 16 | | life of the developmentally disabled; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, One of more than 90 chapters throughout the United |
---|
18 | 18 | | States and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Eta Chapter dates back to |
---|
19 | 19 | | 1960, when Dorothy Logan saw the growing need to form a network of |
---|
20 | 20 | | women in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; by December of that year, the |
---|
21 | 21 | | chapter was officially established, and along with Ms. Logan, the |
---|
22 | 22 | | charter members included: Selena Bennett, Vera Berry, Ella Buard, |
---|
23 | 23 | | Aretta Davis, Marie D. Micheaux, Constance Feaster, Maxine Friday, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Johnnye Hughes, Mae Fretwell Mason, Patricia Osborne, Francis |
---|
25 | 25 | | Washington, and Bethesda Sutto; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, For nearly a half-century, the Eta Chapter has |
---|
27 | 27 | | remained committed to its ideals of sisterhood, leadership, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | community service, and its members may indeed reflect with pride on |
---|
29 | 29 | | the remarkable legacy they share; now, therefore, be it |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Founders Day observance of |
---|
32 | 32 | | the Eta Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and extend to all |
---|
33 | 33 | | those associated with this notable organization sincere best wishes |

34 | 34 | | for a memorable and enjoyable event; and, be it further |
