| 7 | 7 | | advances provide unprecedented opportunities to share information |

| 8 | 8 | | and expand knowledge, they also raise serious data privacy issues; |

| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Many individuals are unaware of data protection and |

| 11 | 11 | | privacy laws and of steps that can be taken to help protect the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | privacy of personal information online; Data Privacy Day was first |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | organized in January 2008 to promote awareness and generate |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | discussion about data privacy practices and rights; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Privacy professionals, academics, legal scholars, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | business executives, and government officials from the United |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | States, Canada, and Europe are working together again in January |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 2009 to further the discussion about data privacy and protection; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | moreover, educators and privacy professionals are discussing data |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | privacy and protection issues with young people in high schools |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | across the country; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The information age has brought unimagined |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | technological advances with an extraordinary capacity to collect, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | store, and share data, and understanding data privacy is the first |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | step toward ensuring the privacy of personal information online; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby recognize January 28, 2009, as Data Privacy Day |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | in Texas and encourage all Texans to learn more about data privacy |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and to take action to protect their personal information. |
