5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the |
---|
6 | 6 | | founding of the first organized school in Edinburg, and this |
---|
7 | 7 | | occasion offers an opportunity to recognize the community's rich |
---|
8 | 8 | | educational history and the notable achievements of the Edinburg |
---|
9 | 9 | | Consolidated Independent School District; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, It was in 1909 that classes initially met in a small |
---|
11 | 11 | | two-room building on the edge of town; the students, who numbered 30 |
---|
12 | 12 | | that first year, walked or rode horses to reach the school, and the |
---|
13 | 13 | | faculty consisted of two teachers; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The Edinburg Independent School District came into |
---|
15 | 15 | | being on April 3, 1919, when the 36th Texas Legislature passed House |
---|
16 | 16 | | Bill No. 603; the district's inaugural superintendent was W. E. |
---|
17 | 17 | | Foster, who earned an annual salary of $2,500 for his work; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The number of pupils in the Edinburg school district |
---|
19 | 19 | | was relatively small in its early years, at least when compared with |
---|
20 | 20 | | the district today; in 1919, there was a total of 799 students who |
---|
21 | 21 | | were served by 25 teachers, and the graduating class of Edinburg |
---|
22 | 22 | | High School that year consisted of just two people; nonetheless, |
---|
23 | 23 | | the district exhibited the same commitment to continuous |
---|
24 | 24 | | improvement that has become its hallmark; within two years of its |
---|
25 | 25 | | establishment, it had begun bus service, started work on a |
---|
26 | 26 | | "teacherage" to provide housing for unmarried female instructors, |
---|
27 | 27 | | and even fielded its first football team, despite the fact that most |
---|
28 | 28 | | of the members had never before played the sport; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In 1926, the Edinburg school system joined with |
---|
30 | 30 | | Common School Districts No. 7 and No. 8 to create the Edinburg |
---|
31 | 31 | | Consolidated Independent School District; the following year, a |
---|
32 | 32 | | bond issue was approved to create a new junior high and high school |
---|
33 | 33 | | as well as fine arts facilities and other improvements; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, Edinburg CISD continued to |
---|
35 | 35 | | expand; by 1949, enrollment stood at 3,900 students, nearly five |
---|
36 | 36 | | times the number that had attended when the district was founded, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and by the following year, there were 14 schools in operation; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Edinburg public school system is one of |
---|
39 | 39 | | the fastest growing in Texas, with 2,000 teachers providing |
---|
40 | 40 | | instruction to almost 31,000 students; it serves an area of some 945 |
---|
41 | 41 | | square miles, which makes it one of the largest land mass districts |
---|
42 | 42 | | in the nation, and it includes 3 high schools, 5 middle schools, 27 |
---|
43 | 43 | | elementary schools, and an alternative education campus; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Upholding the motto "Educational Excellence |
---|
45 | 45 | | Abounds," the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District is |
---|
46 | 46 | | carrying forth its mission of preparing young people in Hidalgo |
---|
47 | 47 | | County for the challenges and opportunities of the future, and its |
---|
48 | 48 | | legacy of academic achievement over the course of nine decades has |
---|
49 | 49 | | played a major role in the ongoing development of South Texas; now, |
---|
50 | 50 | | therefore, be it |
---|
51 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
52 | 52 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of the founding of |
---|
53 | 53 | | the first organized school in Edinburg and congratulate the |
---|
54 | 54 | | educators, staff, and students of the Edinburg Consolidated |
---|
55 | 55 | | Independent School District on this special milestone; and, be it |
---|
56 | 56 | | further |

57 | 57 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

58 | 58 | | prepared for the district as an expression of high regard by the |
---|
59 | 59 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
