| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of First Lutheran Church in Waco are joining |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | together on April 19, 2009, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the founding of the institution; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Originally called Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Ebenezer Congregation, the church was established by Norwegian |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | immigrants in 1884; eight years later, the First Lutheran Church |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Women was organized; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Through the decades, First Lutheran has reached out |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | to the community with a number of notable programs; in addition to |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | sponsoring Boy Scouts of America Troop 18, the congregation helped |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | to establish the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home to provide housing |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | for seniors, created the Student Assistance Fund to support |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Lutheran students at Baylor University, and served as a Meals on |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Wheels site for more than 35 years; currently, the church also |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | offers a program providing free and low-cost legal aid to people in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | need; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, For 125 years, First Lutheran Church in Waco has |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | provided steadfast spiritual and moral guidance to the community it |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | serves, and its continued existence is a tribute to the commitment |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and faith of its leaders and members, past and present; now, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of First |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Lutheran Church in Waco and extend to the members of the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | congregation best wishes for a memorable and meaningful anniversary |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | observance; and, be it further |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
