5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Kerrville lost a beloved neighbor |
---|
6 | 6 | | and much admired civic leader with the passing of Josephine |
---|
7 | 7 | | Schreiner Parker on April 13, 2009, at the age of 92; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Kerrville, "Dodo" Parker was born on |
---|
9 | 9 | | November 16, 1916, to Scott and Josephine Schreiner; she attended |
---|
10 | 10 | | Schreiner Institute, graduated from Tivy High School, and earned |
---|
11 | 11 | | her bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin, where |
---|
12 | 12 | | she was active in the Curtain Club and Pi Beta Phi sorority; she |
---|
13 | 13 | | later studied voice in San Antonio and Los Angeles; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, She married E. C. Parker, Jr., on January 29, 1942, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and while her husband served overseas during World War II, Mrs. |
---|
16 | 16 | | Parker lived in New York City, studying music and voice at Juilliard |
---|
17 | 17 | | School of Music and singing on occasion with the USO; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In 1947, the couple settled in Kerrville, and in |
---|
19 | 19 | | addition to raising her children, Mrs. Parker became an |
---|
20 | 20 | | enthusiastic volunteer, supporting the Cub Scouts, teaching Red |
---|
21 | 21 | | Cross water safety courses, and chairing the Kerr County United |
---|
22 | 22 | | Fund Drive; she also shared her time with the boards of the Auld |
---|
23 | 23 | | Youth Center and Kerrville Cemetery Association, served as |
---|
24 | 24 | | president of the PTA at Starkey Elementary School, Peterson Middle |
---|
25 | 25 | | School, and Tivy High School, and became the first woman to be |
---|
26 | 26 | | elected to the Kerrville Independent School District Board; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Parker maintained a lifelong interest in the |
---|
28 | 28 | | performing arts; she produced elaborate water shows in the Cascades |
---|
29 | 29 | | Swimming Pool and hosted a radio talk show, interviewing such |
---|
30 | 30 | | celebrities as Audie Murphy and Gene Autry; moreover, she held |
---|
31 | 31 | | leadership positions with the Kerrville Community Concerts |
---|
32 | 32 | | Association, Hill Country Arts Foundation, Kerrville Community |
---|
33 | 33 | | Theater, and the Texas Arts Alliance, and she enjoyed playing roles |
---|
34 | 34 | | in several productions at the Point Summer Theater; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, A devoted UT alumnus, Mrs. Parker served on the |
---|
36 | 36 | | board of the institution's Arts and Sciences Foundation and as |
---|
37 | 37 | | district councilwoman of the Texas Ex-Students' Association, board |
---|
38 | 38 | | member of the UT Chancellor's Council, and member of the American |
---|
39 | 39 | | Association of University Women; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Parker was also an advocate for Texas ranchers; |
---|
41 | 41 | | appointed to the Governing Board of the National Wool Growers |
---|
42 | 42 | | Association Auxiliary, she served as president of the Texas Sheep |
---|
43 | 43 | | and Goat Raisers Association Auxiliary and as a member of the Kerr |
---|
44 | 44 | | County Chapter Auxiliary board of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers |
---|
45 | 45 | | Association; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan's most passionate pursuit was |
---|
47 | 47 | | working to preserve local history for future generations; a member |
---|
48 | 48 | | of the James Kerr Chapter of the Daughters of the American |
---|
49 | 49 | | Revolution and the Captain Charles Schreiner Chapter of the United |
---|
50 | 50 | | Daughters of the Confederacy, she was also a charter member and |
---|
51 | 51 | | president of the Hill Country Preservation Society; she devoted |
---|
52 | 52 | | more than three decades to the establishment of the Hill Country |
---|
53 | 53 | | Museum at the Captain Charles Schreiner Mansion, the home of her |
---|
54 | 54 | | great-grandfather, and considered it her greatest achievement; and |
---|
55 | 55 | | WHEREAS, A gracious and giving woman, Dodo Parker contributed |
---|
56 | 56 | | to her community through a lifetime of purposeful endeavor, and she |
---|
57 | 57 | | leaves behind a legacy of good works that will resonate for years to |
---|
58 | 58 | | come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
59 | 59 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
60 | 60 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Josephine Schreiner |
---|
61 | 61 | | Parker and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to |
---|
62 | 62 | | her husband, E. C. Parker, Jr.; to her children, Scott and Barbara |
---|
63 | 63 | | Parker, Tobin and Kim Parker, and Cee Parker and Carlos Ibarra; to |
---|
64 | 64 | | her grandchildren, Scott, Lauren, John, Schreiner, and Tobin; and |
---|
65 | 65 | | to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |

66 | 66 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
