44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The citizens of Kerrville lost a beloved neighbor
66 and much admired civic leader with the passing of Josephine
77 Schreiner Parker on April 13, 2009, at the age of 92; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Kerrville, "Dodo" Parker was born on
99 November 16, 1916, to Scott and Josephine Schreiner; she attended
1010 Schreiner Institute, graduated from Tivy High School, and earned
1111 her bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin, where
1212 she was active in the Curtain Club and Pi Beta Phi sorority; she
1313 later studied voice in San Antonio and Los Angeles; and
1414 WHEREAS, She married E. C. Parker, Jr., on January 29, 1942,
1515 and while her husband served overseas during World War II, Mrs.
1616 Parker lived in New York City, studying music and voice at Juilliard
1717 School of Music and singing on occasion with the USO; and
1818 WHEREAS, In 1947, the couple settled in Kerrville, and in
1919 addition to raising her children, Mrs. Parker became an
2020 enthusiastic volunteer, supporting the Cub Scouts, teaching Red
2121 Cross water safety courses, and chairing the Kerr County United
2222 Fund Drive; she also shared her time with the boards of the Auld
2323 Youth Center and Kerrville Cemetery Association, served as
2424 president of the PTA at Starkey Elementary School, Peterson Middle
2525 School, and Tivy High School, and became the first woman to be
2626 elected to the Kerrville Independent School District Board; and
2727 WHEREAS, Mrs. Parker maintained a lifelong interest in the
2828 performing arts; she produced elaborate water shows in the Cascades
2929 Swimming Pool and hosted a radio talk show, interviewing such
3030 celebrities as Audie Murphy and Gene Autry; moreover, she held
3131 leadership positions with the Kerrville Community Concerts
3232 Association, Hill Country Arts Foundation, Kerrville Community
3333 Theater, and the Texas Arts Alliance, and she enjoyed playing roles
3434 in several productions at the Point Summer Theater; and
3535 WHEREAS, A devoted UT alumnus, Mrs. Parker served on the
3636 board of the institution's Arts and Sciences Foundation and as
3737 district councilwoman of the Texas Ex-Students' Association, board
3838 member of the UT Chancellor's Council, and member of the American
3939 Association of University Women; and
4040 WHEREAS, Mrs. Parker was also an advocate for Texas ranchers;
4141 appointed to the Governing Board of the National Wool Growers
4242 Association Auxiliary, she served as president of the Texas Sheep
4343 and Goat Raisers Association Auxiliary and as a member of the Kerr
4444 County Chapter Auxiliary board of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers
4545 Association; and
4646 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan's most passionate pursuit was
4747 working to preserve local history for future generations; a member
4848 of the James Kerr Chapter of the Daughters of the American
4949 Revolution and the Captain Charles Schreiner Chapter of the United
5050 Daughters of the Confederacy, she was also a charter member and
5151 president of the Hill Country Preservation Society; she devoted
5252 more than three decades to the establishment of the Hill Country
5353 Museum at the Captain Charles Schreiner Mansion, the home of her
5454 great-grandfather, and considered it her greatest achievement; and
5555 WHEREAS, A gracious and giving woman, Dodo Parker contributed
5656 to her community through a lifetime of purposeful endeavor, and she
5757 leaves behind a legacy of good works that will resonate for years to
5858 come; now, therefore, be it
5959 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
6060 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Josephine Schreiner
6161 Parker and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
6262 her husband, E. C. Parker, Jr.; to her children, Scott and Barbara
6363 Parker, Tobin and Kim Parker, and Cee Parker and Carlos Ibarra; to
6464 her grandchildren, Scott, Lauren, John, Schreiner, and Tobin; and
6565 to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
6666 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6767 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
6868 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Josephine
6969 Schreiner Parker.
