44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Science and art teacher Carolyn Cornelius was
66 recognized for her outstanding achievements in conservation
77 education by the Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation
88 District at its 53rd annual awards banquet in Jacksonville on April
99 24, 2009; and
1010 WHEREAS, Ms. Cornelius moved with her family to Cherokee
1111 County in 2001 after retiring from a career in banking and finance
1212 in Fort Worth; in 2002, she began a second career as a member of the
1313 faculty at West Side Elementary School in Jacksonville; and
1414 WHEREAS, This energetic educator has found innovative ways to
1515 teach conservation by combining her two subjects, science and art;
1616 for example, she has introduced her students to the botanical study
1717 of Texas wildflowers while also teaching them about Impressionism
1818 by having them paint wildflowers; and
1919 WHEREAS, With the assistance of parents and local businesses,
2020 Ms. Cornelius has given her students hands-on experience by helping
2121 them create gardens and grow flowers, vegetables, and herbs; her
2222 classes also participate in Project Learning Tree, a conservation
2323 education program of the Texas Forest Service; and
2424 WHEREAS, The creativity and enthusiasm demonstrated by
2525 Carolyn Cornelius have helped her students become better stewards
2626 of the natural resources of the Lone Star State, and she may indeed
2727 take great pride in receiving recognition for her efforts; now,
2828 therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3030 Legislature hereby congratulate Carolyn Cornelius on her receipt of
3131 a conservation education award from the Cherokee County Soil and
3232 Water Conservation District and extend to her sincere best wishes
3333 for continued success with her important work; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for Ms. Cornelius as an expression of high regard by the
3636 Texas House of Representatives.
