5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Science and art teacher Carolyn Cornelius was |

6 | 6 | | recognized for her outstanding achievements in conservation |

7 | 7 | | education by the Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation |

8 | 8 | | District at its 53rd annual awards banquet in Jacksonville on April |
---|
9 | 9 | | 24, 2009; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Cornelius moved with her family to Cherokee |
---|
11 | 11 | | County in 2001 after retiring from a career in banking and finance |
---|
12 | 12 | | in Fort Worth; in 2002, she began a second career as a member of the |
---|
13 | 13 | | faculty at West Side Elementary School in Jacksonville; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, This energetic educator has found innovative ways to |
---|
15 | 15 | | teach conservation by combining her two subjects, science and art; |
---|
16 | 16 | | for example, she has introduced her students to the botanical study |
---|
17 | 17 | | of Texas wildflowers while also teaching them about Impressionism |
---|
18 | 18 | | by having them paint wildflowers; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, With the assistance of parents and local businesses, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Ms. Cornelius has given her students hands-on experience by helping |
---|
21 | 21 | | them create gardens and grow flowers, vegetables, and herbs; her |
---|
22 | 22 | | classes also participate in Project Learning Tree, a conservation |
---|
23 | 23 | | education program of the Texas Forest Service; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The creativity and enthusiasm demonstrated by |
---|
25 | 25 | | Carolyn Cornelius have helped her students become better stewards |
---|
26 | 26 | | of the natural resources of the Lone Star State, and she may indeed |
---|
27 | 27 | | take great pride in receiving recognition for her efforts; now, |
---|
28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Carolyn Cornelius on her receipt of |
---|
31 | 31 | | a conservation education award from the Cherokee County Soil and |
---|
32 | 32 | | Water Conservation District and extend to her sincere best wishes |
---|
33 | 33 | | for continued success with her important work; and, be it further |
