H.R. No. 1988 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Anthony Ortiz, Jr., of Austin has distinguished himself through his notable achievements as a musician, carrying on a family tradition that dates back several generations; and WHEREAS, A 16-year-old junior at Austin High School, Mr. Ortiz has emerged as an accomplished young accordion player who performs professionally with his father and grandfather in Mariachi Corbetas and who has won acclaim in state music competitions; moreover, he is a member of his school's philharmonic orchestra, in which he plays stand-up bass, and he also plays the trumpet, having developed his skill on that instrument while in the band at Martin Middle School; and WHEREAS, Mr. Ortiz first climbed onto the stage at the age of nine, when he began playing maracas and dancing with Mariachi Compania, another ensemble that included his father and grandfather; the following year, he took up the guitar and later got started on the accordion and then the trumpet; he qualified as a finalist in the Big Squeeze Accordion Contest in 2008 and 2009, was selected as a member of the East Side All-Star Band, and has garnered Musician of the Year Awards at Martin Middle School and at the Volente Band Festival; and WHEREAS, This talented entertainer has been inspired by the many members of his family that have enjoyed success in music; his great-grandparents, Alberto and Santos Ortiz, performed in the San Marcos area, and his grandfather, Lupe "Shorty" Ortiz, founded the Tejano band Shorty and the Corvettes in 1961; later, Lupe's sons, Anthony Ortiz, Sr., and Christopher Ortiz, likewise took up instruments, learning the basics of being professional musicians from their father; and WHEREAS, Today, Anthony Ortiz, Jr., has the opportunity to stand alongside his father and grandfather as a member of Mariachi Corbetas, learning valuable lessons not only about music but also about dedication and responsibility; with the guidance provided by his relatives and his own hard work and ability, he has become an outstanding performer, and he may indeed look with optimism and anticipation toward the many opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Anthony Ortiz, Jr., on his achievements as a musician and extend to him sincere best wishes for success in all of his future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Ortiz as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
