5	5	WHEREAS, The Fort Hood community and citizens of Central
6	6	Texas are celebrating Fort Hood Day on January 30, 2009, and this
7	7	occasion provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on the
8	8	extraordinary service rendered by this renowned military
9	9	installation and its dedicated personnel; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Officially opened on September 18, 1942, Fort Hood
11	11	is the largest active-duty armored post in the United States, with a
12	12	total area of 340 square miles; today, as the Army's "premier power
13	13	projection platform," Fort Hood upholds its mission to maintain
14	14	combat readiness and the capacity to mount a "rapid and massive
15	15	military response"; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Since the 1970s, Fort Hood has also been at the
17	17	forefront in testing and introducing new equipment and training
18	18	troops in its use, as well as in evaluating and incorporating new
19	19	tactics and organizational structure; while troops at Fort Hood are
20	20	predominantly focused on combat preparedness, they have also
21	21	deployed to Bosnia in a peacekeeping capacity, and they routinely
22	22	provide disaster relief both at home and abroad; and
23	23	WHEREAS, More than 52,000 soldiers, one out of every 10 on
24	24	active duty, are currently assigned to Fort Hood; the only military
25	25	post in the United States that is able to support two armored
26	26	divisions, the fort is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th
27	27	Infantry Division, in addition to the III Corps Headquarters, the
28	28	13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), the 3rd Armored Cavalry
29	29	Regiment, the 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division, and a
30	30	number of other units; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Since World War II, when the number of troops
32	32	stationed at Fort Hood rose as high as 100,000, the post has trained
33	33	and deployed soldiers for action in Korea, Vietnam, and the First
34	34	Gulf War, as well as dispatched troops to Somalia, the Caribbean
35	35	Basin, Central America, and Southwest Asia; and
36	36	WHEREAS, To date, Fort Hood has deployed more troops for
37	37	Operation Iraqi Freedom than any other base, and its 96th
38	38	Transportation Company, which shipped out for its sixth tour of
39	39	duty in October 2008, has deployed more often to Iraq than any other
40	40	army unit; reflecting its heavy contribution to the war effort in
41	41	that country, Fort Hood has sustained the most casualties in Iraq of
42	42	any post; a number of Fort Hood units have also served in
43	43	Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom; and
44	44	WHEREAS, Among the myriad missions undertaken by Fort Hood
45	45	troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, one that will forever be recounted
46	46	in the history books is the capture of Saddam Hussein by the 1st
47	47	Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division in December 2003;
48	48	and
49	49	WHEREAS, Through their courage, professionalism, and
50	50	devotion to duty, the soldiers of Fort Hood exemplify the highest
51	51	standards of the United States armed forces, and their fellow
52	52	citizens owe to all these troops the deepest debt of gratitude; now,
53	53	therefore, be it
54	54	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
55	55	Legislature hereby recognize January 30, 2009, as Fort Hood Day and
56	56	extend to all those assigned to that post profound appreciation for
57	57	their exemplary valor and their immeasurable service in this
58	58	nation's behalf.
