5	5	WHEREAS, A distinguished ecclesiastical career is nearing
6	6	its end as the Most Reverend Edmond Carmody prepares to conclude his
7	7	service as bishop of Corpus Christi; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Moyvane, County Kerry, Ireland, on January
9	9	12, 1934, Edmond Carmody entered the Major Seminary of St.
10	10	Patrick's College at Carlow, Ireland, in 1951 and was ordained to
11	11	the priesthood for the Archdiocese of San Antonio on June 8, 1957;
12	12	following his arrival in Texas, Bishop Carmody served as associate
13	13	pastor of St. Mary's Church in Victoria and in similar capacities at
14	14	St. Margaret Mary's and St. Henry's Churches in San Antonio; and
15	15	WHEREAS, In 1965, Bishop Carmody was named assistant
16	16	archdiocesan chaplain of scouts for his substantial involvement in
17	17	the scouting movement; he became chaplain of Incarnate Word High
18	18	School and secretary to the Archdiocesan Tribunal in San Antonio
19	19	the following year, and he continued to serve in those posts for the
20	20	next 17 years; during that time, he also completed a six-year term
21	21	as chaplain to the Texas Army National Guard; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Bishop Carmody furthered his education at Our Lady
23	23	of the Lake University in the late 1960s and early 1970s, earning
24	24	master's degrees in education and social work, and he is the
25	25	recipient of a doctorate of humane letters from the University of
26	26	the Incarnate Word in San Antonio; and
27	27	WHEREAS, In 1974, Bishop Carmody was appointed director of
28	28	the Family Life Program, which garnered him national recognition
29	29	and a position as a delegate to the White House Conference on
30	30	Families in 1980; he left Texas in 1983 to perform missionary work
31	31	with the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle in Guayaquil,
32	32	Ecuador, and was called back to Texas in 1988 when he was selected
33	33	as auxiliary bishop of San Antonio by Pope John Paul II; and
34	34	WHEREAS, After his ordainment, Bishop Carmody served in San
35	35	Antonio until his assignment as bishop of the Diocese of Tyler in
36	36	May 1992, and he was named bishop of Corpus Christi in early 2000;
37	37	in addition to the duties of these offices, he has undertaken a
38	38	number of other important roles since 1992, including his work as
39	39	chairman of the missions committee and as a member of both the
40	40	Marriage and Family Life Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on
41	41	Economic Concerns of the Holy See for the National Conference of
42	42	Catholic Bishops; moreover, he has served as state chaplain for the
43	43	Knights of Columbus and as an executive board member for the East
44	44	Texas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America; and
45	45	WHEREAS, Bishop Carmody has figured prominently in a number
46	46	of significant community endeavors during his tenure in Corpus
47	47	Christi; these include the creation of John Paul II High School and
48	48	the building of Mother Teresa Shelter, which serves as a vital
49	49	resource for Corpus Christi's homeless, and he has worked closely
50	50	with the Diabetes Association to promote education about the
51	51	disease; this esteemed Texan plans to remain in the area and
52	52	continue his work in behalf of the community after concluding his
53	53	official duties as bishop of the diocese; and
54	54	WHEREAS, The inspiring spiritual leadership of Bishop Edmond
55	55	Carmody has energized and unified the Diocese of Corpus Christi,
56	56	and residents will long benefit from his exceptional legacy of
57	57	faith and service to others; now, therefore, be it
58	58	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
59	59	Legislature hereby honor the noteworthy career of Bishop Edmond
60	60	Carmody and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
61	61	happiness and fulfillment; and, be it further
62	62	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
63	63	prepared for Bishop Carmody as an expression of high regard by the
64	64	Texas House of Representatives.
