44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of Alpine lost an admired neighbor and
66 friend with the death of Martha Floro on April 8, 2009, at the age of
77 88; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on June 27, 1920, to John and Ruby Davis Ford in
99 Missouri, the former Martha Josephine Ford grew up on the family
1010 farm and graduated from high school in Odessa, Missouri; she met her
1111 husband, George Floro, while earning a junior college degree at
1212 Graceland College in Iowa, and the couple went on to enjoy 65
1313 rewarding years of marriage and raise two children, Charles and
1414 Beverly; with the passing years, the family grew to include seven
1515 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and
1616 WHEREAS, The Floros resided in several different locations
1717 across the country as Mr. Floro pursued his education; while living
1818 in Louisiana, Mrs. Floro earned her bachelor's degree in journalism
1919 at Louisiana State University, and when the family moved to Guam in
2020 1962, she edited a civil service newspaper for U.S. Navy personnel;
2121 following the family's return stateside, Mrs. Floro served as a
2222 social service worker in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, a job she held until
2323 her retirement in 1982; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Floro chose to relocate to Alpine after
2525 retiring, and Mrs. Floro took an active role in the community,
2626 working with the West Texas Democratic Women and the Sierra Club and
2727 joining in fellowship with other members of the Religious Society
2828 of Friends; an avid and gifted writer, she taught creative writing
2929 at the Sunshine House, and her work has appeared in a number of
3030 local and regional publications; she also took part in quilting and
3131 singing groups at the Sunshine House, sold goat cheese at the local
3232 farmers' market, helped found Big Bend Recyclers and Big Bend
3333 People & Goats, and enjoyed birdwatching and photography; and
3434 WHEREAS, Martha Floro led a long and generous life filled
3535 with meaningful contributions to her family and to the many
3636 communities where she lived, and she will be fondly remembered and
3737 greatly missed by all those who held her dear; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Martha Floro and
4040 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
4141 husband, George Floro; to her children, Chuck Floro and his wife,
4242 Debbie, and Beverly Seidlicki; to her grandchildren, Ezekiel Floro
4343 and his wife, Alesia, Angela Pommer and her husband, Kelly, Sarah,
4444 Katie, and Christy Floro, and Carissa and Danica Topham; to her
4545 great-grandchildren, William, Daniel, and Nadine Floro and David
4646 Pommer; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4949 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Martha
5050 Floro.
