| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Respected attorney and community leader DeMetris |

| 6 | 6 | | Sampson is being deservedly honored as part of the 16th annual Women |

| 7 | 7 | | of Spirit Awards Celebration presented by the American Jewish |

| 8 | 8 | | Congress on May 14, 2009; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Sampson holds legal degrees from The University |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of Texas at Austin School of Law and Southern Methodist University |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Dedman School of Law, and she has been a practicing lawyer since |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 1980; a pioneering figure among attorneys in North Texas, she was |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the first African American woman to become a partner in a majority |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | firm in Dallas and has practiced with Linebarger Goggan Blair & |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Sampson since 1987, presently holding the title of managing |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | partner; she also distinguished herself in her work with the San |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Antonio City Attorney's Office, the Dallas County District |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Attorney's Office, and the Committee on Judicial Affairs for the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Texas House of Representatives; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to improving the world around her, Ms. |

| 21 | 21 | | Sampson has devoted her time and talents to a long list of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | organizations and initiatives; in addition to serving on the board |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, she has chaired a number |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of successful school and city bond campaigns and has been a member |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Board and the East Texas State |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | University Board of Regents; moreover, her leadership has benefited |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | many task forces and committees addressing a wide range of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | important issues; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, This admired individual has received numerous |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | awards for her efforts; these include the Dr. Martin Luther King, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Jr., Justice Award, the Maura Award from the Women's Center of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Dallas, the President's Award from the Dallas Urban League, and the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Unsung Hero Award from the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses; and |

| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The Women of Spirit Award provides further |

| 35 | 35 | | recognition of the exceptional professional and civic achievements |

| 36 | 36 | | realized by DeMetris Sampson, whose legacy of service to her fellow |

| 37 | 37 | | citizens is indeed worthy of celebration; now, therefore, be it |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate DeMetris Sampson on her receipt of |

| 40 | 40 | | a 2009 Women of Spirit Award and extend to her sincere best wishes |
