44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Dr. Ricardo Romo is celebrating his 10th anniversary
66 as president of The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2009; and
77 WHEREAS, A native of the Alamo City, Ricardo Romo graduated
88 from Louis W. Fox Academic and Technical High School and attended
99 The University of Texas at Austin; he later earned a master's degree
1010 from Loyola Marymount University and a doctoral degree from the
1111 University of California, Los Angeles, and he published "East Los
1212 Angeles: History of a Barrio"; in 1980, he returned to UT Austin to
1313 teach history before he was named vice provost for undergraduate
1414 education, and from 1987 to 1993, he directed the Texas office of
1515 the Tomas Rivera Center at Trinity University; and
1616 WHEREAS, Dr. Romo was appointed president of UTSA in 1999,
1717 and during his tenure, enrollment has increased by 50 percent and
1818 the institution has been recognized as a leader in "Closing the
1919 Gaps," the statewide initiative to enroll more Texans in college;
2020 in addition, UTSA has added numerous facilities, including a
2121 Recreation/Wellness building and a 1,000-bed Olympic village-style
2222 housing complex, as well as various student support programs; among
2323 Dr. Romo's future goals for the university are to double the current
2424 number of tenured and tenure-track faculty by 2012, to develop
2525 additional doctoral programs and research institutes, to launch the
2626 approved Athletic Initiative Business Plan, and to construct nearly
2727 $750 million in facilities; and
2828 WHEREAS, This distinguished administrator was appointed by
2929 President George W. Bush to the President's Board of Advisers on
3030 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, by Secretary of State
3131 Colin Powell to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
3232 Cultural Organization, and by Governor Rick Perry to the Commission
3333 for College Ready Texas; moreover, Dr. Romo has been active in many
3434 local organizations, including the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of
3535 Commerce, which he served as chair, as well as the board of the
3636 Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and the United Way; and
3737 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoys the love and
3838 support of his wife and UTSA colleague, Dr. Harriett Romo, and he
3939 takes great pride in their two children, Carlos and Anadelia; and
4040 WHEREAS, UTSA has gained immeasurably from Dr. Romo's
4141 dedication and vision over the past decade, and it is a privilege to
4242 recognize his ongoing contributions to higher education in the Lone
4343 Star State; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4545 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Ricardo Romo on his 10th anniversary
4646 as president of The University of Texas at San Antonio and extend to
4747 him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and,
4848 be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for Dr. Romo as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5151 House of Representatives.
