| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Melissa Castano of Edinburg was named a 2008 Student |

| 6 | 6 | | of the Year by the Migrant Student Graduation Enhancement Program |

| 7 | 7 | | of The University of Texas at Austin; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The eldest of three children born to Ricardo and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Maria del Jesus Castano, Melissa Castano attended Johnny G. |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Economedes High School, where she was the highest ranked migrant |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | student and where she maintained a stellar academic record; this |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | fine young Texan devoted herself to her studies and enrolled in the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | most challenging courses available, while also helping to support |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | her family through migrant farm work and other jobs; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, During high school, Ms. Castano was involved in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | numerous extracurricular activities, including Ready Set Teach and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Business Professionals of America; in addition, she served as |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | captain of the junior varsity soccer team and volunteered 126 hours |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | at Edinburg Regional Medical Center; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Her perseverance, hard work, and commitment to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | excellence have earned Ms. Castano such accolades as the Head of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Class Award, presented by the U.S. Border Patrol, the "E" Award, and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the Superintendent's Academic Excellence Award; moreover, she was |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | inducted into both the National Honor Society and the Sociedad |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Honoraria Hispanica; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Melissa Castano has proven to be a student of great |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | ability and initiative, and she may indeed take justifiable pride |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | in her achievements and look to the future with anticipation and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | optimism; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Melissa Castano on being named a |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | 2008 Student of the Year by the Migrant Student Graduation |
