5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Betty Massey is being honored by the Galveston |

6 | 6 | | Independent School District Educational Foundation with its |

7 | 7 | | Educational Leadership Award; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A nonprofit corporation, the GISD Educational |
---|
9 | 9 | | Foundation was established by a coalition of private, business, |
---|
10 | 10 | | industrial, and civic interests to finance and enhance educational |
---|
11 | 11 | | programs not otherwise funded by the district; its Educational |
---|
12 | 12 | | Leadership Award, now in its sixth year, recognizes those |
---|
13 | 13 | | individuals whose sustained commitment to education has made a |
---|
14 | 14 | | lasting impact in Galveston; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Massey has served her community in myriad ways |
---|
16 | 16 | | through the years in her professional life and as a civic leader; a |
---|
17 | 17 | | graduate of the University of California-Berkeley with a degree in |
---|
18 | 18 | | history, she was a teacher and the director of an innovative private |
---|
19 | 19 | | preschool before becoming education director of the Galveston |
---|
20 | 20 | | Historical Foundation in 1983; increasingly responsible positions |
---|
21 | 21 | | with that organization led to her appointment as executive director |
---|
22 | 22 | | in 1990; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Under her leadership, the Galveston Historical |
---|
24 | 24 | | Foundation won numerous awards and a national reputation as one of |
---|
25 | 25 | | the country's largest and most successful historic preservation |
---|
26 | 26 | | organizations; in 2000, Ms. Massey became executive director of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Mary Moody Northen Endowment, a private foundation based in |
---|
28 | 28 | | Galveston that makes charitable grants in both Texas and Virginia |
---|
29 | 29 | | and owns and operates two significant historic properties; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, This dedicated volunteer serves on many |
---|
31 | 31 | | professional and advisory boards and has been highly effective in |
---|
32 | 32 | | numerous civic organizations working in behalf of preservation, |
---|
33 | 33 | | education, and economic development; a former chair of the |
---|
34 | 34 | | Galveston Chamber of Commerce and vice chair of the City of |
---|
35 | 35 | | Galveston Park Board of Trustees, she is a founding member of the |
---|
36 | 36 | | GISD Education Foundation and served as vice chair--development |
---|
37 | 37 | | from 2002 to 2005; moreover, she served on the board of the local |
---|
38 | 38 | | chapter of the United Way and as chair of the city's Comprehensive |
---|
39 | 39 | | Plan Review Committee; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Following the devastation of Hurricane Ike, the city |
---|
41 | 41 | | council named Ms. Massey to head the Community Recovery Committee; |
---|
42 | 42 | | through her expert management, this diverse group of some 300 |
---|
43 | 43 | | residents was able to distill months of public hearings and |
---|
44 | 44 | | brainstorming into the comprehensive 42 Project Plan; in addition |
---|
45 | 45 | | to recommendations for housing, transportation, and economic |
---|
46 | 46 | | revitalization, the plan includes proposals for strengthening the |
---|
47 | 47 | | educational system to build a vibrant workforce and encourage |
---|
48 | 48 | | families to remain in Galveston or relocate to the city; and |
---|
49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Betty Massey has set an inspirational standard of |
---|
50 | 50 | | public service, and her vision and commitment to education are |
---|
51 | 51 | | helping to shape a brighter future for the people of Galveston; now, |
---|
52 | 52 | | therefore, be it |
---|
53 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
54 | 54 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Betty Massey on her receipt of the |
---|
55 | 55 | | Educational Leadership Award from the Galveston Independent School |
---|
56 | 56 | | District Educational Foundation and extend to her best wishes for |
---|
57 | 57 | | continued success in her important endeavors; and, be it further |
---|
58 | 58 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

59 | 59 | | prepared for Ms. Massey as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
