5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Max Stool of San Antonio has distinguished himself |
---|
6 | 6 | | through his dedicated and enthusiastic service to his community, |
---|
7 | 7 | | state, and nation; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Dave and Esther Stool, Max Stool was born |
---|
9 | 9 | | on September 11, 1922, in Del Rio, just two years after his parents |
---|
10 | 10 | | had emigrated from the Ukraine through Ellis Island; as a youth, he |
---|
11 | 11 | | worked part-time in his father's clothing business, the Star Store, |
---|
12 | 12 | | which was located on the city's Main Street; he graduated in 1940 |
---|
13 | 13 | | from Del Rio High School and went on to attend The University of |
---|
14 | 14 | | Texas at Austin; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Stool was |
---|
16 | 16 | | inspired to enlist in the army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, |
---|
17 | 17 | | and he subsequently trained in aircraft maintenance at Oklahoma A&M |
---|
18 | 18 | | University; he served as a member of the Army Air Corps and |
---|
19 | 19 | | participated in six campaigns, including Normandy, northern |
---|
20 | 20 | | France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Air Offensive |
---|
21 | 21 | | Europe, before being honorably discharged on October 2, 1945; he |
---|
22 | 22 | | was awarded the European Theater of Operations Campaign Medal with |
---|
23 | 23 | | six bronze stars; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Stool completed his bachelor's degree at |
---|
25 | 25 | | UT-Austin in 1947 and married the former Libbie Polsky in August of |
---|
26 | 26 | | that same year; the couple lived in Austin while Mr. Stool earned |
---|
27 | 27 | | his law degree, and then settled in Del Rio, where together they |
---|
28 | 28 | | raised three children, Ethan, Elizabeth, and Ben, and where Mr. |
---|
29 | 29 | | Stool returned to work at the Star Store; except for a stint as an |
---|
30 | 30 | | attorney with the Internal Revenue Service at the U.S. Department |
---|
31 | 31 | | of the Treasury, he helped operate the family business, which he |
---|
32 | 32 | | eventually took over, until his retirement in 2001; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to his hometown, Mr. Stool shared his time |
---|
34 | 34 | | and talents with such organizations as the local Girl Scouts |
---|
35 | 35 | | council, the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce, the Del Rio Council for |
---|
36 | 36 | | the Arts, and Val Verde Friends of the Arts, and he was active in the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Rotary Club for 50 years; moreover, he held public office as a board |
---|
38 | 38 | | member of the Del Rio Independent School District from 1961 to 1965 |
---|
39 | 39 | | and later served as chair of the Val Verde County Democratic Party; |
---|
40 | 40 | | along the way, he volunteered in numerous United Fund campaigns and |
---|
41 | 41 | | served as the area liaison for the chaplain's office at Laughlin Air |
---|
42 | 42 | | Force Base; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Stool's public engagement further extends to his |
---|
44 | 44 | | membership in the Texas Jewish Historical Society and the Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Jewish War Veterans; dedicated to his faith and heritage, he has |
---|
46 | 46 | | twice traveled to Israel, and he celebrated a second bar mitzvah in |
---|
47 | 47 | | November 2007 at the age of 85; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan is known for his natural |
---|
49 | 49 | | curiosity, his ability to make and keep friends, and his |
---|
50 | 50 | | razor-sharp memory; he takes great pleasure in traveling, |
---|
51 | 51 | | corresponding with others, and spending time with his family, which |
---|
52 | 52 | | has grown to include six grandchildren; a resident of San Antonio |
---|
53 | 53 | | since 2003, he has shared his experience as a soldier during World |
---|
54 | 54 | | War II with local high school students; and |
---|
55 | 55 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Max Stool has demonstrated |
---|
56 | 56 | | a commitment to his fellow citizens, and it is indeed a pleasure to |
---|
57 | 57 | | honor him for his long and accomplished life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
58 | 58 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
59 | 59 | | Legislature hereby honor Max Stool for his outstanding |
---|
60 | 60 | | contributions to his community, state, and nation and extend to him |
---|
61 | 61 | | sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
---|
