44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Max Stool of San Antonio has distinguished himself
66 through his dedicated and enthusiastic service to his community,
77 state, and nation; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Dave and Esther Stool, Max Stool was born
99 on September 11, 1922, in Del Rio, just two years after his parents
1010 had emigrated from the Ukraine through Ellis Island; as a youth, he
1111 worked part-time in his father's clothing business, the Star Store,
1212 which was located on the city's Main Street; he graduated in 1940
1313 from Del Rio High School and went on to attend The University of
1414 Texas at Austin; and
1515 WHEREAS, Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Stool was
1616 inspired to enlist in the army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio,
1717 and he subsequently trained in aircraft maintenance at Oklahoma A&M
1818 University; he served as a member of the Army Air Corps and
1919 participated in six campaigns, including Normandy, northern
2020 France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Air Offensive
2121 Europe, before being honorably discharged on October 2, 1945; he
2222 was awarded the European Theater of Operations Campaign Medal with
2323 six bronze stars; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Stool completed his bachelor's degree at
2525 UT-Austin in 1947 and married the former Libbie Polsky in August of
2626 that same year; the couple lived in Austin while Mr. Stool earned
2727 his law degree, and then settled in Del Rio, where together they
2828 raised three children, Ethan, Elizabeth, and Ben, and where Mr.
2929 Stool returned to work at the Star Store; except for a stint as an
3030 attorney with the Internal Revenue Service at the U.S. Department
3131 of the Treasury, he helped operate the family business, which he
3232 eventually took over, until his retirement in 2001; and
3333 WHEREAS, Devoted to his hometown, Mr. Stool shared his time
3434 and talents with such organizations as the local Girl Scouts
3535 council, the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce, the Del Rio Council for
3636 the Arts, and Val Verde Friends of the Arts, and he was active in the
3737 Rotary Club for 50 years; moreover, he held public office as a board
3838 member of the Del Rio Independent School District from 1961 to 1965
3939 and later served as chair of the Val Verde County Democratic Party;
4040 along the way, he volunteered in numerous United Fund campaigns and
4141 served as the area liaison for the chaplain's office at Laughlin Air
4242 Force Base; and
4343 WHEREAS, Mr. Stool's public engagement further extends to his
4444 membership in the Texas Jewish Historical Society and the Texas
4545 Jewish War Veterans; dedicated to his faith and heritage, he has
4646 twice traveled to Israel, and he celebrated a second bar mitzvah in
4747 November 2007 at the age of 85; and
4848 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan is known for his natural
4949 curiosity, his ability to make and keep friends, and his
5050 razor-sharp memory; he takes great pleasure in traveling,
5151 corresponding with others, and spending time with his family, which
5252 has grown to include six grandchildren; a resident of San Antonio
5353 since 2003, he has shared his experience as a soldier during World
5454 War II with local high school students; and
5555 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Max Stool has demonstrated
5656 a commitment to his fellow citizens, and it is indeed a pleasure to
5757 honor him for his long and accomplished life; now, therefore, be it
5858 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5959 Legislature hereby honor Max Stool for his outstanding
6060 contributions to his community, state, and nation and extend to him
6161 sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
6262 further
6363 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6464 prepared for Mr. Stool as an expression of high regard by the Texas
6565 House of Representatives.
