| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Donald R. Butts has deservedly been named the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Distinguished Houston Surgeon of the Year for 2009 by the Houston |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Surgical Society; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Butts has devoted his career to the practice of |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | surgical medicine, and he has maintained an admirable record of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | achievement over the course of four decades; in 1970, he helped |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | found the Colon and Rectal Clinic in Houston, and he has led that |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | practice as president in the years since; moreover, he has gained |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | further acclaim among his peers for his other professional |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | endeavors, which have included service as chief of staff at Houston |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Northwest Medical Center and as a clinical associate at The |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | University of Texas Medical School at Houston; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Born in DeKalb in 1935, Donald Butts graduated from |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Marlin High School in 1953 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | at North Texas State University in 1958; four years later, he |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and he completed his internship and residency at Memorial Hermann |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Hospital in Houston between 1962 and 1970, taking time out for two |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | years of service in the U.S. Navy; moreover, Dr. Butts took part in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the fellowship program at The University of Texas Health Sciences |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Center at Houston and had the distinction of being its first |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | graduate; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Butts was the recipient of the Violet Keiller |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Award in 1969 and the Dr. Ed Roberson Award from Houston Northwest |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Medical Center in 2004; a well-known figure in his profession, he is |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | active in numerous medical organizations and has served as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | president of the Harris County Medical Society and as a member of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the Cancer Committee and the Patient-Physician Advocate Committee |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | of the Texas Medical Association; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A surgeon of great ability and extensive experience, |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Donald Butts has won the respect of his peers and the gratitude of |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | his patients, and his accomplishments have contributed to the City |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | of Houston's renown as a center for skilled medical care; now, |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Donald R. Butts on his |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | selection as the Distinguished Houston Surgeon for 2009 by the |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Houston Surgical Society and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | continued success; and, be it further |

| 44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
