44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Robert Pearson of El Paso, esteemed attorney and
66 community leader, passed away on December 12, 2008, at the age of
77 83; and
88 WHEREAS, Born to Jesse and Ophelia Pearson on October 27,
99 1925, in Buda, "Ray" Pearson acquired a strong work ethic and desire
1010 to help others as the son of tenant farmers; he enlisted in the U.S.
1111 Navy at the age of 17 and completed a three-year tour of duty before
1212 enrolling at Sam Houston State Teachers College; he went on to earn
1313 a bachelor's of business administration degree from Baylor
1414 University in 1951 and a law degree from The University of Texas at
1515 Austin in 1955; while a law student, he worked nights at the Austin
1616 State School, an experience that reinforced his sense of
1717 compassion; and
1818 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, the former Shirley Joyce
1919 Turner, made their home in El Paso, where together they raised two
2020 sons, Brent and Robert, and where Mr. Pearson began his long and
2121 rewarding career as an attorney in private practice; he was
2222 especially concerned with the rights of children and families, and
2323 among his numerous accomplishments was the establishment of the
2424 11th Floor Family Law Courts in the El Paso County Courthouse; in
2525 addition, he belonged to numerous professional organizations,
2626 including the El Paso Bar Association, which he served as
2727 president, the Texas Bar Foundation, of which he was a charter life
2828 fellow, and the El Paso Bar Foundation, of which he was a founding
2929 life fellow; and
3030 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his fellow citizens, Mr. Pearson also
3131 distinguished himself through his civic involvement; he served as
3232 chair of the El Paso Housing Authority and the El Paso Water
3333 Utilities Public Service Board, and he volunteered with the
3434 American Heart Association and the Pilot Home for the Elderly; he
3535 was active in politics as well, serving as a delegate to the
3636 Democratic National Convention in 1964, as secretary of the State
3737 Democratic Executive Committee from 1965 to 1968, and as the West
3838 Texas Region point person for Governor John Connally; moreover, he
3939 organized and held weekly political discussion and action meetings
4040 for some 40 years; and
4141 WHEREAS, Mr. Pearson was named an Outstanding Senior Lawyer
4242 by the El Paso Bar Association, and he was recognized for his
4343 advocacy in behalf of families and children by the El Paso Family
4444 Law Bar Association; and
4545 WHEREAS, A man of great generosity, humor, and humility, Ray
4646 Pearson made a positive difference in the city of El Paso, and
4747 although he will be deeply missed, he leaves behind a legacy that
4848 will continue to resonate for many years to come; now, therefore, be
4949 it
5050 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5151 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Pearson and
5252 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his sons,
5353 Brent Pearson and his wife, Lourdes, and Robert T. Pearson and his
5454 wife, Susan; to his grandchildren, Evan Zachary, Matthew Brandon,
5555 Carly Ray, and Paige Susan Pearson; and to his other relatives and
5656 many friends; and, be it further
5757 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5858 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5959 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert
6060 "Ray" Pearson.
