| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Joe Beene of Odessa has overcome tragedy to inspire |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | countless people, and he is being honored for his remarkable |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | accomplishments on May 16, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A former linebacker for Permian High School, Mr. |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Beene was critically injured on the last day of football practice |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | his senior year, causing him to become paralyzed from the neck down; |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | he has since worked hard to re-establish his life, and his many |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | achievements include learning to ride a specialized bicycle on |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | which he has clocked more than 13,000 miles; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Beene is pursuing a degree in history with a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | minor in business at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | where he is expected to graduate in December 2009; devoted to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | helping others, he shares his time as a tutor in the AVID program at |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Bonham Junior High School and as a youth counselor at Life Unlimited |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Church, and he serves as a motivational speaker at the Ector County |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Youth Center; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Known for his healthy glow and playful sense of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | humor, Mr. Beene enjoys going hunting with his physical therapist |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and watching the fish in the pond at his house; moreover, in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | preparation for his desire to enter the ministry, he can often be |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | found studying the Bible; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Joe Beene has set an outstanding example of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | perseverance, strength, and generosity to which others may aspire, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and his fellow Odessa residents are proud to claim him as one of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | their own; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby honor Joe Beene for his many achievements and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | extend to him sincere best wishes for all the good fortune he so |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | richly deserves; and, be it further |
