44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Howard
66 Lee Mangold of San Antonio, who died on April 8, 2009, at the age of
77 76; and
88 WHEREAS, Howard Mangold was born in Keyser, West Virginia, on
99 January 31, 1933, to Howard Taft Mangold and Oma Gladys Mangold;
1010 after graduating from Keyser High School in 1950, he attended
1111 Potomac State College; and
1212 WHEREAS, Interested in aviation from an early age, he earned
1313 his pilot's license at the age of 19 and purchased an Aeronca
1414 Champion airplane; a few years later, he enlisted in the U.S. Air
1515 Force and was accepted into the aviation cadet program in 1955; and
1616 WHEREAS, He married the former Vivian Knopp in 1957, and
1717 after his discharge from the air force the couple lived in West
1818 Virginia, where he worked first for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
1919 and then at Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory; and
2020 WHEREAS, In 1962, Mr. Mangold and his wife moved to San
2121 Antonio, where he attended San Antonio College, majoring in public
2222 speaking, economics, and business administration; during his time
2323 at the college, he won praise for his innovative ideas for reducing
2424 the amount of plastic litter along roadways; he later went to work
2525 in the Mech-Tech department at Kelly Air Force Base, and he earned
2626 awards on two occasions for his money-saving ideas; and
2727 WHEREAS, While continuing his employment at Kelly AFB, Mr.
2828 Mangold opened the first of several motorcycle dealerships in the
2929 San Antonio area, and then following his civil service retirement
3030 in 1999, he served as an assistant for councilman and then mayor Ed
3131 Garza and councilman Julian Castro; he also worked for Mannheim
3232 Auto Auctions and held a patent for an invention called the Bridge
3333 Buddy; and
3434 WHEREAS, An energetic and innovative spirit, Howard Mangold
3535 lived a full and productive life, and memories of happy times spent
3636 in his company will be held forever in the hearts of those who knew
3737 and loved him; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Howard Lee Mangold and
4040 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of
4141 52 years, Vivian Mangold; to his daughter, Anita Louise Mangold
4242 Eisthen; to his son, Howard Keith Mangold; and to his other
4343 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4646 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Howard Lee
4747 Mangold.
