5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Nick Jimenez is retiring as editorial page editor of |

6 | 6 | | the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in 2009, drawing to a close a |
---|
7 | 7 | | successful career in journalism that has spanned more than four |
---|
8 | 8 | | decades; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jimenez began working with the Caller-Times in |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1968, when it was still two newspapers, the morning Caller and the |
---|
11 | 11 | | afternoon Times, and he covered city and county government as well |
---|
12 | 12 | | as the police and court beats for both papers; from the start, he |
---|
13 | 13 | | proved himself to be a determined and resourceful reporter; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1978, Mr. Jimenez became assistant city editor of |
---|
15 | 15 | | the Times, and then city editor of both papers; he was promoted to |
---|
16 | 16 | | associate editor in 1989, and in 1994 he took over as editor of the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Caller-Times editorial page; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In that position, Mr. Jimenez earned a reputation as |
---|
19 | 19 | | a fair, tough-minded, and coolheaded writer and editor who took |
---|
20 | 20 | | seriously the editor's role of formulating and articulating the |
---|
21 | 21 | | debate on issues of interest to the community; furthermore, he has |
---|
22 | 22 | | been a valued mentor to several generations of young journalists; |
---|
23 | 23 | | and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jimenez has also demonstrated his commitment to |
---|
25 | 25 | | the community through his active engagement with the PTA, his |
---|
26 | 26 | | church, and his neighborhood association; he has played an active |
---|
27 | 27 | | role with the paper's annual Christmas Appeal, which has raised |
---|
28 | 28 | | $2.6 million for needy children since 1973, and he coordinated the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Distinguished Scholars program, which recognizes 18 outstanding |
---|
30 | 30 | | high school students every year; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of his many civic contributions, Mr. |
---|
32 | 32 | | Jimenez was recognized with the William R. Burleigh Award for |
---|
33 | 33 | | Distinguished Community Service from the Scripps Howard Foundation |
---|
34 | 34 | | in 2006; in 2001, he received the Jack Douglas Award from the Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Associated Press Managing Editors Association for creating the |
---|
36 | 36 | | Buster Haas Minority Internship Program, which places summer |
---|
37 | 37 | | interns with small Texas newspapers; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Even in retirement, Mr. Jimenez plans to continue to |
---|
39 | 39 | | serve the paper as editor emeritus, and the citizens of Corpus |
---|
40 | 40 | | Christi will continue to benefit from his experience and |
---|
41 | 41 | | perspective; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Greatly respected by his colleagues for his |
---|
43 | 43 | | integrity, professionalism, and commitment to excellence, Nick |
---|
44 | 44 | | Jimenez may indeed take great pride in his 41-year record of |
---|
45 | 45 | | outstanding journalism as he embarks on the next exciting chapter |
---|
46 | 46 | | of his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
48 | 48 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Nick Jimenez on his retirement as |
---|
49 | 49 | | editorial page editor of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and extend |
---|
50 | 50 | | to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it |
