55 WHEREAS, Polo Becerra of Houston is receiving the State Award
66 (Texas) at the inaugural Flavors of Passion Awards in Dallas on July
77 23, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, Created by second-generation restaurateur and chef
99 Felipe Gaytan, the Flavors of Passion Awards celebrate Latino
1010 culinary culture by recognizing outstanding Latino chefs from
1111 across Texas and from around the nation and the world; the awards
1212 pay tribute to the authenticity, variety, creativity, and overall
1313 excellence of each honoree's contributions to this vital heritage;
1414 and
1515 WHEREAS, Leopoldo "Polo" Becerra started at the Post Oak
1616 Grill in Houston as a sous chef in 1990, worked his way up to
1717 executive chef, and purchased the restaurant in 2002; more
1818 recently, he has opened a new restaurant, Polo's Signature, where
1919 he blends New American cooking with Latin and Asian influences; and
2020 WHEREAS, The diversity and innovative spirit of Latino
2121 cuisine contribute greatly to American culture overall, and Mr.
2222 Becerra merits special acclaim for his achievements and for setting
2323 an outstanding example for the next generation of Latino chefs;
2424 now, therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2626 Legislature hereby congratulate Polo Becerra for winning the State
2727 Award (Texas) at the first Flavors of Passion Awards and extend to
2828 him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and,
2929 be it further
3030 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3131 prepared for Mr. Becerra as an expression of high regard by the
3232 Texas House of Representatives.
