5	5	WHEREAS, Dorothy Khoury of Longview has distinguished
6	6	herself as an active volunteer and as chair of the Gregg County
7	7	Republican Party; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Mrs. Khoury was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, and
9	9	was raised in Virginia and Florida; she moved to Texas in 1961,
10	10	following her marriage to Longview native Alvin Khoury, who is now a
11	11	retired senior district judge; the couple have enjoyed nearly five
12	12	decades together, and they have been blessed with two sons, Sam and
13	13	Andy; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Active in local politics, Mrs. Khoury served two
15	15	terms as president of Gregg County Republican Women, and during her
16	16	tenure, the group was recognized as one of the top clubs by both the
17	17	national and state Republican women's organizations; in addition,
18	18	Mrs. Khoury was named a "Woman of Distinction" by the Texas
19	19	Federation of Republican Women at the state convention in 2000; and
20	20	WHEREAS, On her election as chair of the Gregg County
21	21	Republican Party, Mrs. Khoury became the first woman in county
22	22	history to lead a political party, and she held the position from
23	23	2002 through 2008; under her skilled leadership, the organization
24	24	flourished, and its candidates gained every countywide and
25	25	nonjudicial district office and more precinct offices than ever
26	26	before; the Gregg County GOP also saw its first Hispanic and African
27	27	American officials, as well as the first U.S. Representative from
28	28	the county; in addition to contributing to the group's success,
29	29	Mrs. Khoury set fund-raising records and increased voter turnout
30	30	and participation in conventions, and she was a member of the Texas
31	31	Republican County Chairmen's Association and of various executive
32	32	committees; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Mrs. Khoury has further devoted her time to numerous
34	34	local groups, including the Rotary Club of Longview, Longview
35	35	Community Theatre, and the Longview Federated Women's Clubs, and
36	36	she is on the boards of Community Healthcore and the Gregg County
37	37	Historical Foundation; she is also a past president of the
38	38	Greenbriar Garden Club and the Gregg County Bar Auxiliary, and she
39	39	received the Distinguished Docent of the Year designation from the
40	40	Gregg County Historical Museum; and
41	41	WHEREAS, A generous civic leader, Dorothy Khoury has garnered
42	42	the lasting respect and appreciation of her fellow residents, and
43	43	she may indeed reflect with pride on the positive impact she has had
44	44	on Gregg County; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby honor Dorothy Khoury for her service to the
47	47	Gregg County Republican Party and her outstanding community
48	48	involvement and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
49	49	happiness; and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
51	51	prepared for Mrs. Khoury as an expression of high regard by the
52	52	Texas House of Representatives.
