5	5	WHEREAS, The team from Entertainment Series of Irving took
6	6	top honors in the "Irving Trivia--the City and the Man" contest at
7	7	Valley Ranch Library on April 19, 2009; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Irving Heritage Society, the Irving
9	9	Public Library, and the Irving Independent School District, the
10	10	contest was part of "Celebrating Irving--The City and the Man," a
11	11	monthlong commemoration of the 226th birthday of the American
12	12	writer Washington Irving, author of the classic story "Rip van
13	13	Winkle" and the namesake of the city of Irving; and
14	14	WHEREAS, The trivia contest tested each team's knowledge of
15	15	the history of the city of Irving and the life of Washington Irving;
16	16	11 teams entered the preliminary rounds, with four making it to the
17	17	finals at Valley Ranch Library; and
18	18	WHEREAS, The winning team from Entertainment Series of Irving
19	19	scored an early victory by knowing that, in Washington Irving's
20	20	story, the character Rip van Winkle left his home to get away from
21	21	his nagging wife; they triumphed after a grueling round of 16
22	22	tiebreaker and 2 sudden-death questions by knowing that the monks
23	23	who founded the Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving were
24	24	originally from Hungary; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Sharing in the victory at this fun and informative
26	26	event were the four members of the ESI team, Max Whitley, Richard
27	27	Knoll, Marlene Steward, and F. M. Gilbert, and they may indeed take
28	28	pride in their comprehensive knowledge of their community and of
29	29	the man who shares his name with the city; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
31	31	Legislature hereby congratulate Max Whitley, Richard Knoll,
32	32	Marlene Steward, and F. M. Gilbert of Entertainment Series of
33	33	Irving for winning the 2009 "Irving Trivia--the City and the Man"
34	34	contest and extend to the team's members sincere best wishes for
35	35	continued happiness; and, be it further
36	36	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
37	37	prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
38	38	House of Representatives.
