5	5	WHEREAS, Complementary and alternative medicine is a group of
6	6	diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products
7	7	that are used in addition to or in place of conventional medicine to
8	8	treat all aspects of well-being; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Texans have long enjoyed the freedom to choose from
10	10	a wide variety of complementary and alternative modalities to
11	11	improve and sustain their health, and today numerous Texans receive
12	12	care from complementary and alternative health care providers; and
13	13	WHEREAS, A number of surveys, including one published in
14	14	December 2008 by the National Center for Complementary and
15	15	Alternative Medicine, have shown that these types of health care
16	16	services are used by individuals of all ages from diverse ethnic and
17	17	socioeconomic backgrounds; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Complementary and alternative medicine therapies
19	19	range from acupuncture and massage to natural products such as fish
20	20	oil and echinacea, and they are used to help treat an array of
21	21	diseases and conditions; and
22	22	WHEREAS, The health and welfare of countless people have been
23	23	enhanced by the practice of complementary and alternative health
24	24	care and an increased awareness of these therapies could benefit
25	25	many; now, therefore, be it
26	26	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
27	27	Legislature hereby recognize January 25-31, 2009, as Texas Health
28	28	Freedom Week and encourage all Texans to seek optimal health.
