H.R. No. 2131
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Joe Compian of La Marque was named an Unsung Hero by
the Galveston County Daily News in 2009; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated volunteer, Mr. Compian was chosen for
this accolade based on his enduring commitment to serving his
community, and particularly his role in the Hurricane Ike recovery
effort; and
WHEREAS, In addition to homes and businesses, Hurricane Ike
caused severe damage to numerous buildings that housed nonprofit
agencies, causing many of these organizations to cease delivery of
their vital services; Mr. Compian saw the need to establish a
centralized location in which local nonprofit groups could set up
temporary operations, and as the parish social minister for Holy
Rosary Catholic Church, he was able to offer the church's facility
as a makeshift community services center; working behind the scenes
and coordinating the efforts of multiple agencies, including the
Red Cross and FEMA, Mr. Compian helped ensure the availability of
resources in Galveston County during the critical aftermath of the
storm, and he assisted such organizations as The Jesse Tree, the
Chamber of Commerce, the Children's Center, and Help4Galveston; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Compian, who was the president of RE/MAX of
Texas before he retired, has further distinguished himself through
his involvement in Gulf Coast Interfaith, the Catholic Campaign for
Human Development, and Galveston County Restore and Rebuild
Committee; he is also the coordinator of The Jesse Tree
Prescription Advocacy Program, an initiative that provides
uninsured clients with assistance and affordable pharmaceuticals;
and
WHEREAS, Through his selflessness, compassion, and humility,
Joe Compian has garnered the lasting respect and appreciation of
his fellow residents, and he may indeed reflect with great pride on
the notable contributions he has made to his community; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby honor Joe Compian on his selection as an Unsung
Hero and commend him for his many acts of goodwill; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Compian as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
