| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Joe Compian of La Marque was named an Unsung Hero by |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the Galveston County Daily News in 2009; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, A dedicated volunteer, Mr. Compian was chosen for |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | this accolade based on his enduring commitment to serving his |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | community, and particularly his role in the Hurricane Ike recovery |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | effort; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In addition to homes and businesses, Hurricane Ike |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | caused severe damage to numerous buildings that housed nonprofit |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | agencies, causing many of these organizations to cease delivery of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | their vital services; Mr. Compian saw the need to establish a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | centralized location in which local nonprofit groups could set up |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | temporary operations, and as the parish social minister for Holy |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Rosary Catholic Church, he was able to offer the church's facility |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | as a makeshift community services center; working behind the scenes |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and coordinating the efforts of multiple agencies, including the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Red Cross and FEMA, Mr. Compian helped ensure the availability of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | resources in Galveston County during the critical aftermath of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | storm, and he assisted such organizations as The Jesse Tree, the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Chamber of Commerce, the Children's Center, and Help4Galveston; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Compian, who was the president of RE/MAX of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Texas before he retired, has further distinguished himself through |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | his involvement in Gulf Coast Interfaith, the Catholic Campaign for |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Human Development, and Galveston County Restore and Rebuild |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Committee; he is also the coordinator of The Jesse Tree |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Prescription Advocacy Program, an initiative that provides |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | uninsured clients with assistance and affordable pharmaceuticals; |
|---|

|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Through his selflessness, compassion, and humility, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Joe Compian has garnered the lasting respect and appreciation of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | his fellow residents, and he may indeed reflect with great pride on |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | the notable contributions he has made to his community; now, |

| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
