 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, In an outstanding demonstration of strength and
 skill, the Bishop High School powerlifting team claimed the 2009
 Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division 3 state
 championship on March 28 at the state meet held at the Taylor County
 Expo Center in Abilene; and
 WHEREAS, The victory gave Bishop High its first team state
 title in any sport, and the Badgers also became the first
 powerlifting team from their area to earn the state crown; and
 WHEREAS, Pacing the Bishop lifters at the state meet were
 seniors Victor Caldera and Albert Guajardo, both of whom claimed
 individual state titles; Mr. Caldera won the 165-pound weight class
 by hefting a total of 1,400 pounds in the three lift categories,
 while Mr. Guajardo set a new state record with a 440-pound squat
 lift on his way to securing the 123-pound title; and
 WHEREAS, The Badgers also received vital contributions from
 the other members of the team; senior Manny Mechell finished as
 runner-up to Mr. Caldera in the 165-pound weight class, and
 freshman Travis Charles placed sixth in his 114-pound category; and
 WHEREAS, Bishop High's powerlifting program got its start 10
 years ago, and it has been guided since the beginning by coach
 George Luna; his inspired leadership has garnered widespread
 respect for the program, and the state title is a fitting reward for
 the hard work and determination exhibited by everyone involved with
 the team; and
 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is the dream of every
 high school athlete, and this achievement will be a continuing
 source of pride for the Bishop High powerlifters as well as for
 their many supporters in the local community; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate the Bishop High School
 powerlifting team on winning the 2009 Texas High School
 Powerlifting Association Division 3 state championship and extend
 best wishes to the athletes and coaches for continued success; and,
 be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
