| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Community leader Maxine Benke of Helotes received a |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | significant honor when she was selected to serve as parade marshal |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | for the community's annual Cornyval Parade; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Named for the Mexican word for stalk corn, elote, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the city of Helotes pays tribute to its heritage every spring with |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Cornyval Festival; the four-day event features an arts and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | crafts fair, food booths, live music, a rodeo, a carnival midway, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and the Miss Helotes Pageant in addition to the festival parade; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Maxine Benke has long been dedicated to giving back |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | to her community; active with the Helotes Festival Association |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | since 1979, she has worked in a number of capacities, serving as |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | secretary and backstage director of the pageant for the past |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | decade; in addition to designing tickets, flyers, and rodeo |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | posters, she has been vice president of the carnival since 1989; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, A Lioness, Mrs. Benke has represented the Lions Club |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | as treasurer, secretary, and director and has coordinated the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | annual Lions Arts & Craft Show for 20 years; she is also a member of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the Order of the Eastern Star and a founding director of the local |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | International Order of the Rainbow for Girls in Helotes; she has |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | further shared her time decorating City Hall for Christmas and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | organizing the first Christmas Night parade; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Maxine Benke has given much to her community, and it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | is fitting that her contributions were recognized with this place |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of honor in the Cornyval Parade; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Maxine Benke on her designation as |

| 31 | 31 | | parade marshal for the 2009 Cornyval Parade and extend to her |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
