44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State lost a passionate advocate in
66 behalf of all Texans with the death of Betty Price Anderson on
77 December 28, 2008, at the age of 75; and
88 WHEREAS, Born to the Reverend Henry Price and Irene Price on
99 August 18, 1933, the former Betty Price grew up in Central Texas and
1010 earned a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University in
1111 1954; she married John Anderson two years later, and the couple made
1212 their home in Lubbock, where Dr. Anderson served as a professor of
1313 chemistry at Texas Tech University; and
1414 WHEREAS, Ms. Anderson soon distinguished herself through her
1515 outstanding volunteerism in behalf of numerous causes; her
1616 contributions to the city of Lubbock alone are extraordinary, with
1717 the Urban Renewal Board, the South Plains Regional Workforce
1818 Development Board, the Lubbock Area United Way Board, the South
1919 Plains Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council, and the Saint Mary of
2020 the Plains Hospital Foundation Board all benefiting from her
2121 membership; moreover, she was a founding member of the South Plains
2222 Food Bank, and she shared her time and talents with PEOPLE FIRST,
2323 the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center, the South Plains AIDS Resource
2424 Center, the Lubbock Independent School District Committee on
2525 Excellence, and the city's planning and zoning commission; and
2626 WHEREAS, An esteemed leader on the state and national level
2727 as well, Ms. Anderson was appointed to the Texas Commission on
2828 Children and Youth, the Adult and Protective Services Advisory
2929 Committee, and the Texas Department of Human Services Aged and
3030 Disabled Committee, which she chaired; in addition, she was deeply
3131 involved in the local, state, and national organizations of the
3232 League of Women Voters and the American Association of University
3333 Women, both of which she served as state president, and she chaired
3434 the Texas Committee for the Humanities and the Texas Commission on
3535 Women; she also gave generously as a board member of the Center for
3636 Public Policy Priorities for more than a decade; and
3737 WHEREAS, Recognized often for her tireless efforts, Ms.
3838 Anderson was the recipient of numerous honors, including the George
3939 Mahon Award from the Lubbock chapter of the Association for Women in
4040 Communications, the United Way Rita Harmon Volunteer Service Award,
4141 the League of Women Voters State President's Award, and the
4242 National League of Women Voters Education Fund Leaders Award, among
4343 others; and
4444 WHEREAS, Ms. Anderson was further known as a dedicated wife
4545 and mother, a faithful congregant of St. John's Methodist Church in
4646 Lubbock, and a lifelong learner who earned a master's degree from
4747 Texas Tech University in 1973; and
4848 WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a
4949 person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on
5050 the world as they move through it, and Betty Price Anderson's legacy
5151 of compassion, vision, and commitment to her fellow Texans will be
5252 cherished for years to come; now, therefore, be it
5353 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5454 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Betty Price Anderson
5555 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
5656 husband, Dr. John Anderson; to her sons, Art Anderson and his wife,
5757 Kate, and Dr. Dale Anderson and his wife, Brenda; to her four
5858 grandchildren; to her sister, Patsy; and to her other relatives and
5959 many friends; and, be it further
6060 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6161 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
6262 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Betty Price
6363 Anderson.
