5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jack Hays of West Columbia was inducted into the |

6 | 6 | | Ronnie Bell Hall of Honor by the Greater Houston Football Coaches |

7 | 7 | | Association on May 6, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hays began his long involvement in sports as a |
---|
9 | 9 | | quarterback at Sunset High School in Dallas, which he carried to the |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1950 state championship, and continued to demonstrate excellence on |
---|
11 | 11 | | the gridiron at North Texas State University; he went on to serve as |
---|
12 | 12 | | head football coach at El Campo High School for seven years before |
---|
13 | 13 | | taking the same position at Columbia High School in 1969; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, During 18 years of coaching, Mr. Hays compiled an |
---|
15 | 15 | | impressive record of 130 wins, 60 losses, and 8 ties; moreover, he |
---|
16 | 16 | | earned seven district championships and 15 playoff games, and he |
---|
17 | 17 | | advanced to the state finals twice; with the Columbia Roughnecks |
---|
18 | 18 | | alone, his record was 81-37-5, and he is credited with helping |
---|
19 | 19 | | establish them as one of the premier teams in Class 3A; along with |
---|
20 | 20 | | his assistants, Charlie Forehand, Ed Derrich, and Charlie Brand, he |
---|
21 | 21 | | was selected to coach the South team in the 1974 Texas High School |
---|
22 | 22 | | Coaches Association All Star game at the Astrodome, and he led the |
---|
23 | 23 | | team to victory; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hays further contributed to his profession as a |
---|
25 | 25 | | member of the THSCA board, which he served as president in 1975; his |
---|
26 | 26 | | many honors include being twice named the Brazoria County Coach of |
---|
27 | 27 | | the Year and being inducted into the THSCA Hall of Honor and the |
---|
28 | 28 | | Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Following his departure from coaching, Mr. Hays |
---|
30 | 30 | | remained in West Columbia and founded the Hays Insurance Agency |
---|
31 | 31 | | with his wife, Ellen; he gives back to the community as an active |
---|
32 | 32 | | member of the West Columbia Rotary Club and the Columbia United |
---|
33 | 33 | | Methodist Church, and he previously served as a founding director |
---|
34 | 34 | | of the local chapter of the Gulf Coast Conservation Association and |
---|
35 | 35 | | as a member of the board of the Brazoria County Library; he was |
---|
36 | 36 | | named Business Leader of the Year 1999 by the Brazoria County |
---|
37 | 37 | | Partnership; and |

38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Jack Hays was known throughout his coaching career |

39 | 39 | | for his integrity, dependability, and strong principles, and he may |
---|
40 | 40 | | indeed reflect with pride on his many noteworthy achievements; now, |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jack Hays on his induction into the |
