5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Those young people who give of their time and |

6 | 6 | | talents to assist in the demanding work of the Texas Legislature are |

7 | 7 | | truly deserving of our gratitude and admiration, and Leslie Weston |
---|
8 | 8 | | is one such individual; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Originally from Louisiana, Ms. Weston has served as |
---|
10 | 10 | | a legislative aide in the office of State Representative Elliott |
---|
11 | 11 | | Naishtat from January through May 2009, and her commitment, |
---|
12 | 12 | | dedication, and cheerful disposition have been greatly appreciated |
---|
13 | 13 | | by her colleagues; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Weston's expertise in the area of health and |
---|
15 | 15 | | human services has been particularly valuable to both |
---|
16 | 16 | | Representative Naishtat's staff and his constituents, and in |
---|
17 | 17 | | assisting citizens with questions relating to these areas, she has |
---|
18 | 18 | | seen firsthand the ability of public officials to have an impact on |
---|
19 | 19 | | policy; moreover, she has learned more than she thought possible |
---|
20 | 20 | | about state schools, board and care homes, child care licensing, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and other human services-related issues as she followed the House |
---|
22 | 22 | | Committee on Human Services and prepared for Representative |
---|
23 | 23 | | Naishtat analyses of every bill considered by the committee; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Going above and beyond the call of duty, Ms. Weston |
---|
25 | 25 | | has often stayed late into the night, preparing the |
---|
26 | 26 | | representative's committee notebook and shepherding legislation to |
---|
27 | 27 | | establish the Legislative Committee on Aging; she has further |
---|
28 | 28 | | distinguished herself through her work on Representative |
---|
29 | 29 | | Naishtat's legislation regarding access to electronic educational |
---|
30 | 30 | | materials for blind and visually impaired students, social worker |
---|
31 | 31 | | practice issues, and increasing access to higher education through |
---|
32 | 32 | | Americorps, and she has learned a considerable amount about floor |
---|
33 | 33 | | amendments; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Weston is a graduate student in the Master of |
---|
35 | 35 | | Social Work Program at The University of Texas at Austin, and her |
---|
36 | 36 | | knowledge and understanding of the inner workings of the Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature and the legislative process will surely serve her well |
---|
38 | 38 | | as she prepares to enter the arena of macro social work; although |
---|
39 | 39 | | her coworkers, most especially the legislative director, are sorry |
---|
40 | 40 | | to see her tenure end, they share in her excitement as she prepares |
---|
41 | 41 | | to embark on a future that is bright with promise; now, therefore, |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby honor Leslie Weston for her outstanding service |

45 | 45 | | as a legislative aide and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
