5	5	WHEREAS, Carlos Reynaldo Gutierrez of Seguin has bridged
6	6	Latin and Anglo cultures for more than five decades as a musician in
7	7	Central Texas; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Victoria on February 16, 1943, "Charlie"
9	9	Gutierrez demonstrated his love of music at a young age; his uncle,
10	10	Rudy Martinez, played in a big band and served as his mentor, buying
11	11	him his first musical instrument and giving him extensive lessons;
12	12	a gifted saxophonist, flutist, and vocalist, Mr. Gutierrez was
13	13	invited to play weekend shows alongside his uncle as a teenager; he
14	14	joined the orchestra of Dario Perez in 1959 and graduated from St.
15	15	Joseph's High School two years later; and
16	16	WHEREAS, During the 1960s and 1970s, Mr. Gutierrez played
17	17	with Joe Camacho's band, which pleased audiences with both Mexican
18	18	music and popular tunes of the day; after Mr. Camacho passed away,
19	19	Mr. Gutierrez joined with other members of his ensemble to form the
20	20	Crystals, playing across Texas and for many Victoria civic and
21	21	social functions into the 1990s; and
22	22	WHEREAS, This dedicated musician also began performing from
23	23	time to time with Austin big band legend Nash Hernandez; after Mr.
24	24	Hernandez passed away in 1994, his son, Ruben, took on leadership of
25	25	the Nash Hernandez Orchestra, and he hired Mr. Gutierrez as lead
26	26	singer in 1999; and
27	27	WHEREAS, While excelling as a performer, Mr. Gutierrez has
28	28	enjoyed success as a businessman as well; in all his endeavors, he
29	29	enjoys the love and support of his wife of 45 years, Terry
30	30	Gutierrez, their two daughters, Christine Welty and Cathy Biggins,
31	31	and their grandchildren, Kristin Gutierrez and Skyler Biggins; and
32	32	WHEREAS, An outstanding citizen and a captivating vocalist,
33	33	Mr. Gutierrez continues to blend cultures and delight a host of fans
34	34	as he sings Latin favorites, American jazz standards, and classic
35	35	R&B with the longest-running big band in the capital of the Lone
36	36	Star State; now, therefore, be it
37	37	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
38	38	Legislature hereby honor Charlie Gutierrez for his remarkable
39	39	musical career and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
40	40	success; and, be it further
41	41	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
42	42	prepared for Mr. Gutierrez as an expression of high regard by the
43	43	Texas House of Representatives.
