44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Mildred L. Thornton, a longtime member of the Eta
66 Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., is being honored by the
77 organization at its annual Founders Day celebration on June 13,
88 2009; and
99 WHEREAS, Guided by the motto "Not For Ourselves But For
1010 Others," Eta Phi Beta is a venue for African American businesswomen
1111 that seeks to promote high scholastic standards, personal growth,
1212 career awareness, and community involvement; Mrs. Thornton joined
1313 the sorority's Eta Chapter in 1966, just six years after the group
1414 was established in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; in addition to twice
1515 serving as the chapter president, she has held such positions as
1616 fund-raising chair and financial secretary, and she was named
1717 Member of the Year; and
1818 WHEREAS, Before retiring in 1991, Mrs. Thornton was a
1919 prekindergarten teacher at a local private school, and she also
2020 taught adult education courses at Dunbar High School and at Tarrant
2121 County College; moreover, she has generously assisted elderly
2222 residents in the community, and she is a member of St. Andrew's
2323 United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, where she has participated
2424 in the Sanctuary Choir, the board of trustees, and United Methodist
2525 Women; and
2626 WHEREAS, For more than four decades, Mildred Thornton has
2727 been committed to the Eta Phi Beta ideals of sisterhood,
2828 leadership, and community service, and she may indeed reflect with
2929 great pride on the lasting contributions she has made to this
3030 notable organization; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3232 Legislature hereby honor Mildred L. Thornton of the Eta Chapter of
3333 Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and extend to her sincere best wishes
3434 for continued happiness; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3636 prepared for Mrs. Thornton as an expression of high regard by the
3737 Texas House of Representatives.
