| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Mildred L. Thornton, a longtime member of the Eta |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., is being honored by the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | organization at its annual Founders Day celebration on June 13, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 2009; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Guided by the motto "Not For Ourselves But For |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Others," Eta Phi Beta is a venue for African American businesswomen |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | that seeks to promote high scholastic standards, personal growth, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | career awareness, and community involvement; Mrs. Thornton joined |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the sorority's Eta Chapter in 1966, just six years after the group |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | was established in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; in addition to twice |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | serving as the chapter president, she has held such positions as |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | fund-raising chair and financial secretary, and she was named |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Member of the Year; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Before retiring in 1991, Mrs. Thornton was a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | prekindergarten teacher at a local private school, and she also |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | taught adult education courses at Dunbar High School and at Tarrant |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | County College; moreover, she has generously assisted elderly |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | residents in the community, and she is a member of St. Andrew's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, where she has participated |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | in the Sanctuary Choir, the board of trustees, and United Methodist |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Women; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, For more than four decades, Mildred Thornton has |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | been committed to the Eta Phi Beta ideals of sisterhood, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | leadership, and community service, and she may indeed reflect with |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | great pride on the lasting contributions she has made to this |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | notable organization; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby honor Mildred L. Thornton of the Eta Chapter of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and extend to her sincere best wishes |

| 34 | 34 | | for continued happiness; and, be it further |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
