5	5	WHEREAS, The Katy High School Tigers football team won the
6	6	2008 University Interscholastic League 5A Division II state
7	7	championship with a 17-3 victory over Wylie High School on December
8	8	20 at Reliant Stadium in Houston; and
9	9	WHEREAS, This title game triumph gave Katy its second
10	10	consecutive state crown and the sixth in school history, with other
11	11	titles coming in 1959, 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2007; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Overcoming two early-season losses, the Tigers were
13	13	inspired by the steady leadership of head coach Gary Joseph, taking
14	14	to heart his emphasis on perseverance as they rebounded to finish
15	15	the season with a record of 13 wins and just 3 defeats; a key to
16	16	Katy's success in 2009 was a smothering defense that held opponents
17	17	without a touchdown in four separate contests; the Tigers also got a
18	18	boost from their dominating victory over a high school team from
19	19	Florida in a game broadcast live on ESPN in October, which was the
20	20	school's first-ever national television appearance; and
21	21	WHEREAS, In the championship game, the defense set the tone
22	22	early as linebacker Sebi Carbajal, the game's defensive MVP,
23	23	recorded a sack to thwart Wylie's opening possession; Katy's ground
24	24	attack asserted itself late in the first half, as Michael Webber
25	25	scored the first of his two touchdowns to give the Tigers a halftime
26	26	lead of 10-0; the rushing game continued to roll in the second half
27	27	as running back Will Jeffery, the game's offensive MVP, picked up
28	28	more than 80 of his 148 total yards; the defense continued to do its
29	29	part as well, and when the final seconds ticked off the clock, the
30	30	Katy High School team had once again proven itself the finest 5A
31	31	Division II football squad in the Lone Star State; and
32	32	WHEREAS, The members of the 2008 Katy High School
33	33	championship football team are fine upstanding young men; proudly
34	34	representing the Katy area and the Katy Independent School District

68	68	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
69	69	Legislature hereby congratulate the Katy High School football team
70	70	on winning the UIL 5A Division II state championship and extend
71	71	sincere best wishes to the players, coaches, and staff for
72	72	continued success; and, be it further
73	73	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
74	74	prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
75	75	House of Representatives.
