5	5	WHEREAS, The congregation of the First United Methodist
6	6	Church of Donna is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the
7	7	church's founding in February 2009, and this joyous event is
8	8	certain to be a memorable occasion for all concerned; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The First United Methodist Church of Donna was
10	10	organized in February 1909; its first pastor, the Reverend C. W.
11	11	Goodwyn, also had the responsibility of shepherding the McAllen
12	12	congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; and
13	13	WHEREAS, In 1918, the Reverend O. C. Crow assumed the pulpit
14	14	of the Donna church; under his direction, membership grew from 20
15	15	parishioners to several hundred; this exceeded the capacity of the
16	16	church's modest wood frame building, which resulted in services and
17	17	Sunday school classes being held in the Donna High School
18	18	auditorium until an addition could be erected; today's church home,
19	19	constructed in 1951, features stained glass windows, a prominent
20	20	steeple, and sufficient room to meet the myriad needs of a thriving
21	21	congregation; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Since its inception, First United Methodist Church
23	23	has remained a haven of strength, comfort, and inspiration for
24	24	residents of the Rio Grande Valley, and its continued existence is a
25	25	tribute to the unwavering commitment of its members, both past and
26	26	present; now, therefore, be it
27	27	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
28	28	Legislature hereby congratulate all those affiliated with the First
29	29	United Methodist Church of Donna on the occasion of its 100th
30	30	anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future;
31	31	and, be it further
32	32	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
33	33	prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
34	34	House of Representatives.
