44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The accomplished life of Gloria Reyes Garcia of
66 Raymondville has inspired all who are privileged to know her; and
77 WHEREAS, Born on August 14, 1952, to migrant workers Jose and
88 Santos Sosa, Ms. Garcia attended Raymondville schools while working
99 alongside her family in the fields; as a young adult, she took a job
1010 with a migrant worker outreach program called the Last Yellow Bus,
1111 in which she drove people to and from their medical appointments and
1212 delivered medications; and
1313 WHEREAS, She was soon promoted to work in the referral
1414 department of Su Clinica Familiar, a new local clinic with a focus
1515 on migrant health care, and she went on to serve in several
1616 positions, including assistant social worker and migrant hospital
1717 coordinator, before being named the clinic manager in 1977; and
1818 WHEREAS, After leaving the organization and pursuing a second
1919 career in real estate, Ms. Garcia entered public service as a member
2020 of the Raymondville Independent School District Board of Trustees;
2121 she worked hard to improve the educational experience of area
2222 children, successfully advocating for the passage of two school
2323 bonds and helping secure salary increases for both teachers and
2424 support staff; also during her tenure, she contributed important
2525 leadership as vice president and president of the board; and
2626 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has further served her fellow
2727 citizens as vice president of the Su Clinica Familiar Board of
2828 Directors and as a member of the National Advisory Council on
2929 Migrant Health; moreover, between 1999 and 2001, she co-published a
3030 weekly newspaper called the Willacy Times; in one of her well known
3131 but less formal roles, she has assisted numerous survivors of
3232 sexual violence, especially those who have nowhere else to turn;
3333 and
3434 WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia's real estate business has flourished
3535 through the years, and she currently owns more than 100 acres of
3636 land; she is supported in her endeavors by her husband, Richard, as
3737 well as her five children, Sandra, Jennifer, Stacey, Erica, and
3838 Richard; and
3939 WHEREAS, Gloria Reyes Garcia has set an outstanding example
4040 of hard work and generosity to which all may aspire, and it is
4141 indeed a pleasure to recognize this distinguished Texan; now,
4242 therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4444 Legislature hereby honor Gloria Reyes Garcia for her myriad
4545 achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
4646 success and happiness; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for Ms. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4949 House of Representatives.
