5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The accomplished life of Gloria Reyes Garcia of |
---|
6 | 6 | | Raymondville has inspired all who are privileged to know her; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Born on August 14, 1952, to migrant workers Jose and |
---|
8 | 8 | | Santos Sosa, Ms. Garcia attended Raymondville schools while working |
---|
9 | 9 | | alongside her family in the fields; as a young adult, she took a job |
---|
10 | 10 | | with a migrant worker outreach program called the Last Yellow Bus, |
---|
11 | 11 | | in which she drove people to and from their medical appointments and |
---|
12 | 12 | | delivered medications; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, She was soon promoted to work in the referral |
---|
14 | 14 | | department of Su Clinica Familiar, a new local clinic with a focus |
---|
15 | 15 | | on migrant health care, and she went on to serve in several |
---|
16 | 16 | | positions, including assistant social worker and migrant hospital |
---|
17 | 17 | | coordinator, before being named the clinic manager in 1977; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, After leaving the organization and pursuing a second |
---|
19 | 19 | | career in real estate, Ms. Garcia entered public service as a member |
---|
20 | 20 | | of the Raymondville Independent School District Board of Trustees; |
---|
21 | 21 | | she worked hard to improve the educational experience of area |
---|
22 | 22 | | children, successfully advocating for the passage of two school |
---|
23 | 23 | | bonds and helping secure salary increases for both teachers and |
---|
24 | 24 | | support staff; also during her tenure, she contributed important |
---|
25 | 25 | | leadership as vice president and president of the board; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has further served her fellow |
---|
27 | 27 | | citizens as vice president of the Su Clinica Familiar Board of |
---|
28 | 28 | | Directors and as a member of the National Advisory Council on |
---|
29 | 29 | | Migrant Health; moreover, between 1999 and 2001, she co-published a |
---|
30 | 30 | | weekly newspaper called the Willacy Times; in one of her well known |
---|
31 | 31 | | but less formal roles, she has assisted numerous survivors of |
---|
32 | 32 | | sexual violence, especially those who have nowhere else to turn; |
---|
33 | 33 | | and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia's real estate business has flourished |
---|
35 | 35 | | through the years, and she currently owns more than 100 acres of |
---|
36 | 36 | | land; she is supported in her endeavors by her husband, Richard, as |
---|
37 | 37 | | well as her five children, Sandra, Jennifer, Stacey, Erica, and |
---|
38 | 38 | | Richard; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Reyes Garcia has set an outstanding example |
---|
40 | 40 | | of hard work and generosity to which all may aspire, and it is |
---|
41 | 41 | | indeed a pleasure to recognize this distinguished Texan; now, |
---|
42 | 42 | | therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby honor Gloria Reyes Garcia for her myriad |
---|
45 | 45 | | achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
46 | 46 | | success and happiness; and, be it further |

47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
