44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and alumni of Austin College
66 in Sherman are bidding farewell to a respected leader as Dr. Oscar
77 C. Page retires as the president of that esteemed institution on
88 June 30, 2009; and
99 WHEREAS, Dr. Page became the 14th president of Austin College
1010 in 1994, and during his tenure, he has done an exceptional job of
1111 continuing its tradition of excellence in preparing students for
1212 productive and rewarding lives; and
1313 WHEREAS, A historian who earned his bachelor's degree from
1414 Western Kentucky University and his master's and doctoral degrees
1515 from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Page taught at Western
1616 Kentucky University and the University of Georgia before becoming
1717 the dean of Wesleyan College in Georgia in 1971; seven years later,
1818 he moved to Lander College in South Carolina, where he was appointed
1919 vice president for academic affairs and provost and served as
2020 acting president for a term; in 1988, he was named president of
2121 Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, remaining in that post
2222 until joining Austin College; and
2323 WHEREAS, Highly respected by his peers, he has served on the
2424 boards of numerous educational organizations, including the
2525 Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the Independent
2626 Colleges and Universities of Texas, and the National Association of
2727 Independent Colleges and Universities; moreover, he is a former
2828 president of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Commission and was a
2929 member of the Presidents' Commission and the Division III
3030 Management Council for the National Collegiate Athletic
3131 Association; his achievements have been recognized with a number of
3232 honors, among them, the Chief Executive Officer Leadership Award
3333 from District IV of the Council for Advancement and Support of
3434 Education and the Meritorious Service Award from the Southern
3535 Association of Colleges and Schools; and
3636 WHEREAS, Dr. Page has taken a very active role in each of the
3737 communities where he has lived, and during his time in Texas, he has
3838 been a member of the Sherman Rotary Club, the Sherman and Denison
3939 Chambers of Commerce, and United Way of Grayson County; in
4040 addition, he has served on the boards of directors for the United
4141 Way, Junior Achievement of Grayson County, and the March of Dimes;
4242 and
4343 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Dr. Page enjoys the love and
4444 support of his wife, Anna Laura Hood Page, who works as a
4545 professional musician and composer; the couple have two children,
4646 Kristen and Matthew; and
4747 WHEREAS, For a decade and a half, Oscar Page has demonstrated
4848 great skill and leadership in furthering the mission of Austin
4949 College and helping thousands of students to attain their academic
5050 and professional goals, and he may take justifiable pride in a job
5151 well done as he looks ahead to the next exciting chapter of his
5252 life; now, therefore, be it
5353 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5454 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Oscar C. Page on the occasion
5555 of his retirement from Austin College and commend him for his
5656 outstanding service as president; and, be it further
5757 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5858 prepared for Dr. Page as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5959 House of Representatives.
