5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and alumni of Austin College |

6 | 6 | | in Sherman are bidding farewell to a respected leader as Dr. Oscar |
---|
7 | 7 | | C. Page retires as the president of that esteemed institution on |
---|
8 | 8 | | June 30, 2009; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Page became the 14th president of Austin College |
---|
10 | 10 | | in 1994, and during his tenure, he has done an exceptional job of |
---|
11 | 11 | | continuing its tradition of excellence in preparing students for |
---|
12 | 12 | | productive and rewarding lives; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, A historian who earned his bachelor's degree from |
---|
14 | 14 | | Western Kentucky University and his master's and doctoral degrees |
---|
15 | 15 | | from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Page taught at Western |
---|
16 | 16 | | Kentucky University and the University of Georgia before becoming |
---|
17 | 17 | | the dean of Wesleyan College in Georgia in 1971; seven years later, |
---|
18 | 18 | | he moved to Lander College in South Carolina, where he was appointed |
---|
19 | 19 | | vice president for academic affairs and provost and served as |
---|
20 | 20 | | acting president for a term; in 1988, he was named president of |
---|
21 | 21 | | Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, remaining in that post |
---|
22 | 22 | | until joining Austin College; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Highly respected by his peers, he has served on the |
---|
24 | 24 | | boards of numerous educational organizations, including the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the Independent |
---|
26 | 26 | | Colleges and Universities of Texas, and the National Association of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Independent Colleges and Universities; moreover, he is a former |
---|
28 | 28 | | president of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Commission and was a |
---|
29 | 29 | | member of the Presidents' Commission and the Division III |
---|
30 | 30 | | Management Council for the National Collegiate Athletic |
---|
31 | 31 | | Association; his achievements have been recognized with a number of |
---|
32 | 32 | | honors, among them, the Chief Executive Officer Leadership Award |
---|
33 | 33 | | from District IV of the Council for Advancement and Support of |
---|
34 | 34 | | Education and the Meritorious Service Award from the Southern |
---|
35 | 35 | | Association of Colleges and Schools; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Page has taken a very active role in each of the |
---|
37 | 37 | | communities where he has lived, and during his time in Texas, he has |
---|
38 | 38 | | been a member of the Sherman Rotary Club, the Sherman and Denison |
---|
39 | 39 | | Chambers of Commerce, and United Way of Grayson County; in |
---|
40 | 40 | | addition, he has served on the boards of directors for the United |
---|
41 | 41 | | Way, Junior Achievement of Grayson County, and the March of Dimes; |
---|
42 | 42 | | and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Dr. Page enjoys the love and |
---|
44 | 44 | | support of his wife, Anna Laura Hood Page, who works as a |
---|
45 | 45 | | professional musician and composer; the couple have two children, |
---|
46 | 46 | | Kristen and Matthew; and |
---|
47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, For a decade and a half, Oscar Page has demonstrated |
---|
48 | 48 | | great skill and leadership in furthering the mission of Austin |
---|
49 | 49 | | College and helping thousands of students to attain their academic |
---|
50 | 50 | | and professional goals, and he may take justifiable pride in a job |
---|
51 | 51 | | well done as he looks ahead to the next exciting chapter of his |
---|
52 | 52 | | life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
53 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
54 | 54 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Oscar C. Page on the occasion |
---|
55 | 55 | | of his retirement from Austin College and commend him for his |
---|
56 | 56 | | outstanding service as president; and, be it further |
---|
57 | 57 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
58 | 58 | | prepared for Dr. Page as an expression of high regard by the Texas |

59 | 59 | | House of Representatives. |
