5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin is celebrating its |

6 | 6 | | 25th anniversary in 2009; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, This beloved institution was founded at the Arts |
---|
8 | 8 | | Warehouse in 1984 by artists Sylvia Orozco, Pio Pulido, and Sam |
---|
9 | 9 | | Coronado and subsequently became one of the first art venues in |
---|
10 | 10 | | downtown Austin when it moved to a building on Congress Avenue; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the museum has produced and |
---|
12 | 12 | | presented cultural and educational programs for more than 100,000 |
---|
13 | 13 | | children from throughout Central Texas, and it has hosted numerous |
---|
14 | 14 | | exhibitions focusing on traditional and contemporary Mexican, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Latino, and Latin American art and culture; moreover, it has |
---|
16 | 16 | | organized an annual Dia de los Muertos procession and festival that |
---|
17 | 17 | | regularly draws thousands of participants of all ages and |
---|
18 | 18 | | backgrounds; in 2001, the museum received major support from the |
---|
19 | 19 | | City of Austin to purchase the Congress Avenue building in exchange |
---|
20 | 20 | | for producing an annual exhibition of art created by underserved |
---|
21 | 21 | | youth; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Among the many milestones in the museum's rich |
---|
23 | 23 | | history are its selection as the Official Sister Museum of the Diego |
---|
24 | 24 | | Rivera and Frida Kahlo Studio Museum in Mexico City in 1993 and its |
---|
25 | 25 | | designation by the Texas Legislature as the Official Mexican and |
---|
26 | 26 | | Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas in 2003; that same year, |
---|
27 | 27 | | the museum signed an agreement with the Mexican government's |
---|
28 | 28 | | National Council on Arts and Culture to present international art |
---|
29 | 29 | | exhibitions; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Most recently, the museum benefited from the passage |
---|
31 | 31 | | of a $5 million bond package that will go toward a new museum |
---|
32 | 32 | | facility and expanded educational services, and it initiated an |
---|
33 | 33 | | internship and research assistant program in partnership with the |
---|
34 | 34 | | College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Generously supported by sponsors, donors, members, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and a visionary board of directors, Mexic-Arte Museum has |
---|
37 | 37 | | distinguished itself as a vital cultural resource, and with its |
---|
38 | 38 | | innovative exhibitions and educational outreach programs, it is |
---|
39 | 39 | | sure to remain a respected Central Texas institution for many years |
---|
40 | 40 | | to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby honor the Mexic-Arte Museum on its 25th |
---|
43 | 43 | | anniversary and extend to all those associated with the museum |
---|
44 | 44 | | sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

46 | 46 | | prepared for the Mexic-Arte Museum as an expression of high regard |
