44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin is celebrating its
66 25th anniversary in 2009; and
77 WHEREAS, This beloved institution was founded at the Arts
88 Warehouse in 1984 by artists Sylvia Orozco, Pio Pulido, and Sam
99 Coronado and subsequently became one of the first art venues in
1010 downtown Austin when it moved to a building on Congress Avenue; and
1111 WHEREAS, Since its inception, the museum has produced and
1212 presented cultural and educational programs for more than 100,000
1313 children from throughout Central Texas, and it has hosted numerous
1414 exhibitions focusing on traditional and contemporary Mexican,
1515 Latino, and Latin American art and culture; moreover, it has
1616 organized an annual Dia de los Muertos procession and festival that
1717 regularly draws thousands of participants of all ages and
1818 backgrounds; in 2001, the museum received major support from the
1919 City of Austin to purchase the Congress Avenue building in exchange
2020 for producing an annual exhibition of art created by underserved
2121 youth; and
2222 WHEREAS, Among the many milestones in the museum's rich
2323 history are its selection as the Official Sister Museum of the Diego
2424 Rivera and Frida Kahlo Studio Museum in Mexico City in 1993 and its
2525 designation by the Texas Legislature as the Official Mexican and
2626 Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas in 2003; that same year,
2727 the museum signed an agreement with the Mexican government's
2828 National Council on Arts and Culture to present international art
2929 exhibitions; and
3030 WHEREAS, Most recently, the museum benefited from the passage
3131 of a $5 million bond package that will go toward a new museum
3232 facility and expanded educational services, and it initiated an
3333 internship and research assistant program in partnership with the
3434 College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin; and
3535 WHEREAS, Generously supported by sponsors, donors, members,
3636 and a visionary board of directors, Mexic-Arte Museum has
3737 distinguished itself as a vital cultural resource, and with its
3838 innovative exhibitions and educational outreach programs, it is
3939 sure to remain a respected Central Texas institution for many years
4040 to come; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4242 Legislature hereby honor the Mexic-Arte Museum on its 25th
4343 anniversary and extend to all those associated with the museum
4444 sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for the Mexic-Arte Museum as an expression of high regard
4747 by the Texas House of Representatives.
