44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Americans owe an immeasurable debt to their military
66 personnel, whose brave and steadfast efforts have long secured this
77 nation's freedom, and it is with profound gratitude and sorrow that
88 we remember the life of U.S. Army Sergeant Anselmo Martinez III, who
99 died in action on May 18, 2007, at the age of 26; and
1010 WHEREAS, Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry
1111 Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Sergeant
1212 Martinez served as a gunner in Tahrir, Iraq; he suffered fatal
1313 wounds when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive
1414 device; and
1515 WHEREAS, The son of Anselmo and Diana Martinez of Robstown,
1616 "BJ" Martinez attended Robstown High School, where he was known for
1717 his kindness, his humor, and his love of fishing; after his
1818 graduation in 1998, he worked at a local fast food restaurant and
1919 for a car rental office at the Corpus Christi airport; he married
2020 the former Christina Hernandez and the couple later became the
2121 proud parents of two cherished daughters, Felicity and Eliana; and
2222 WHEREAS, Sergeant Martinez enlisted in the army after
2323 September 11 to serve his country and begin a career that would
2424 allow him to be a good provider for his family; during his first
2525 posting to Fort Benning, Georgia, he attended Airborne School;
2626 following his reenlistment in November 2004, he was stationed at
2727 Fort Hood, where he attended the Primary Leader Development Course;
2828 he subsequently was posted to the Joint Readiness Training Center
2929 at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was deployed to Iraq in October 2006; a
3030 skilled and dedicated soldier, he earned numerous awards and
3131 decorations, among them the Army Achievement Medal, the Bronze
3232 Star, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge; and
3333 WHEREAS, Anselmo Martinez was a devoted husband and father
3434 and an exemplary soldier, and his fellow Texans mourn the loss of a
3535 hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in behalf of his country; now,
3636 therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3838 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant Anselmo
3939 Martinez III and extend sincere sympathy to his many loved ones;
4040 and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4242 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4343 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant
4444 Anselmo Martinez III.
