5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe an immeasurable debt to their military |

6 | 6 | | personnel, whose brave and steadfast efforts have long secured this |
---|
7 | 7 | | nation's freedom, and it is with profound gratitude and sorrow that |
---|
8 | 8 | | we remember the life of U.S. Army Sergeant Anselmo Martinez III, who |
---|
9 | 9 | | died in action on May 18, 2007, at the age of 26; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry |
---|
11 | 11 | | Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Sergeant |
---|
12 | 12 | | Martinez served as a gunner in Tahrir, Iraq; he suffered fatal |
---|
13 | 13 | | wounds when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive |
---|
14 | 14 | | device; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The son of Anselmo and Diana Martinez of Robstown, |
---|
16 | 16 | | "BJ" Martinez attended Robstown High School, where he was known for |
---|
17 | 17 | | his kindness, his humor, and his love of fishing; after his |
---|
18 | 18 | | graduation in 1998, he worked at a local fast food restaurant and |
---|
19 | 19 | | for a car rental office at the Corpus Christi airport; he married |
---|
20 | 20 | | the former Christina Hernandez and the couple later became the |
---|
21 | 21 | | proud parents of two cherished daughters, Felicity and Eliana; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Martinez enlisted in the army after |
---|
23 | 23 | | September 11 to serve his country and begin a career that would |
---|
24 | 24 | | allow him to be a good provider for his family; during his first |
---|
25 | 25 | | posting to Fort Benning, Georgia, he attended Airborne School; |
---|
26 | 26 | | following his reenlistment in November 2004, he was stationed at |
---|
27 | 27 | | Fort Hood, where he attended the Primary Leader Development Course; |
---|
28 | 28 | | he subsequently was posted to the Joint Readiness Training Center |
---|
29 | 29 | | at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was deployed to Iraq in October 2006; a |
---|
30 | 30 | | skilled and dedicated soldier, he earned numerous awards and |
---|
31 | 31 | | decorations, among them the Army Achievement Medal, the Bronze |
---|
32 | 32 | | Star, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Anselmo Martinez was a devoted husband and father |
---|
34 | 34 | | and an exemplary soldier, and his fellow Texans mourn the loss of a |
---|
35 | 35 | | hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in behalf of his country; now, |
---|
36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant Anselmo |
---|
39 | 39 | | Martinez III and extend sincere sympathy to his many loved ones; |
---|
