| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The courage and decisiveness of Officer Christopher |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | M. Sellers of the Houston Police Department have been recognized |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | with the 2008 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Valor; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A law enforcement professional with 13 years of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | experience, Officer Sellers was visiting an apartment complex with |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | his partner on the morning of September 17, 2008, when he heard a |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | child screaming for help; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Following the screams, Officer Sellers came into an |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | alley and found a man with a sawed-off shotgun grabbing a young boy; |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | when the officer tried to reach the boy, the assailant held on and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | pointed his weapon at the boy's head; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Officer Sellers fired on and wounded the suspect, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | who released the boy and fell to his knees; as his partner helped |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the boy, Officer Sellers ordered the suspect to drop his gun, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | when the man refused, the officer was forced to fire again; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The suspect was a drug user with a history of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | threatening the children in the neighborhood; in this difficult and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | dangerous situation, Officer Sellers put the safety of the young |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | boy above all else, and his swift and decisive action saved the life |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | of the child and made the neighborhood safer; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Officer Christopher Sellers on his |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | receipt of the 2008 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Award for Valor and extend to him sincere best wishes for the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | future; and, be it further |
