6 | 6 | | I. McLead suffered an immeasurable loss when he died on August 22, |

7 | 7 | | 2007, at the age of 23, while serving in Iraq; and |

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A sniper who also did reconnaissance work, Sergeant |

9 | 9 | | McLead died of injuries sustained in a helicopter crash near |
---|
10 | 10 | | Kirkuk; he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry |
---|
11 | 11 | | Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, |
---|
12 | 12 | | based at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The son of Patrick and Patricia McLead of Aransas |

14 | 14 | | Pass, Garrett Ian McLead was born in Houston and grew up in |

15 | 15 | | Rockport; he attended Rockport High School, where he played in the |
---|
16 | 16 | | band, competed in varsity tennis and soccer, and worked on the |
---|
17 | 17 | | yearbook staff; an upbeat and outgoing prankster with a warm smile |
---|
18 | 18 | | and infectious laugh, he enjoyed skateboarding, surfing, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | spending time with his lively, close-knit group of friends; he |
---|
20 | 20 | | possessed a deep faith and was a valued member of First Baptist |
---|
21 | 21 | | Church of Rockport and organized its annual Big Kahuna Surf Trip; in |
---|
22 | 22 | | addition, he was a member of Young Life Rockport and of the Third |
---|
23 | 23 | | Coast Squadron/Commemorative Air Force; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, This valiant soldier dreamed of becoming an actor as |
---|
25 | 25 | | a boy, but following the attacks of September 11, 2001, he felt |
---|
26 | 26 | | called to serve his country and enlisted in the army shortly after |
---|
27 | 27 | | his birthday in May 2002, the year he graduated; his adventurous |
---|
28 | 28 | | nature led him to sign up for sniper school and mountain survival |
---|
29 | 29 | | training; after his initial tour of duty in Afghanistan, he chose to |
---|
30 | 30 | | re-enlist and took great pride in the important work he was doing in |
---|
31 | 31 | | Iraq; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have young men |
---|
33 | 33 | | and women whose love of country leads them to service in the |
---|
34 | 34 | | military, and time can never diminish the profound debt that |
---|
35 | 35 | | Americans owe to Sergeant McLead for his sacrifice; now, therefore, |
---|
36 | 36 | | be it |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant Garrett |
---|
39 | 39 | | McLead and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; |
